The Obama Beer ControversyFollow

#1 Jul 28 2009 at 11:10 AM Rating: Excellent
So, Grates and Crowley have agreed to come drink a beer and talk it over at the white house (in what seems to be Obama's first mediatory "Can't we all just get along?" attempt.)

However, the question is what beer they will be drinking. The White House has traditionally only stocked American beers, so any imports are right out. Budweiser got taken over by a Swedish company and Miller/Coors regularly donate to the Republicans.

So far, the top contenders seem to be Sam Adams and Goose Island (a local Chicago brew that Obama had at his election night party.)

It's amusing, though, that when you're the President, you can't even have a goddamn beer without it being scrutinized for possibly being unAmerican.

(The founding fathers weren't too keen on beer. Ben Franklin said people would be better off just eating fresh bread, but on the other hand wine is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy.)

I'd go with the Goose Island based purely on the fact that it's not a "cheap" beer and folks across America won't know it well enough to have an opinion.

Obviously it should be BYOB. Why should the taxpayers pay for Obama's buddies to get drunk at the White House??

Whut?

What else was there to drink? In the 1600s, beer (usually 'small' or wek beer) was the only drink available to working classes in the absence of water purification. Average allowance for a labourer was between a quart and a gallon per day.

There's a widely held view that after Speedwell sprang a leak, Mayflower had to support more people than had been rationed for, and they landed at Plymouth only because they ran out of ale.

Anywho, Obama should buck the trend and share a jug o' moonshine.

What the US refers to as the "founding fathers" were rich white landowners, and they can 150ish years after the Pilgrims. They drank lots of tea and were PO'd about the taxes on it. And as I said, Ben Franklin preferred wine instead.

ftfy

To translate it to modren terms, most were what we'd describe as middle-to-upper middle class, considering the economics of the time. A massive proportion of the wealthy population got on boats and went back to England where it was safe. Also, most of the "founding fathers" were lovers of beers, alcoholic ciders, and all manner of homemade alcoholic goodness.

Well, my opinion of Franklin just went up a few degrees.

Anything from New Belgium or O'Dells... both Colorado brewed.

Yep, I'm biased.

In my biased opinion . . . they should drink Terrapin!

Whoa hey, they were just named the 7th best brewery in the country. Damn.

I'd be happy to mail them a six-pack of their choice of any beer from Deschutes Brewery.

Not being a beer drinker myself, I'll just bow to tradition and go with Yuengling. Apparently, they are the oldest continuously run brewery in the country.

Went to college in DE, and Yuengling was totally the beer of choice if you went out to bars. At parties you'd get whatever was cheapest (Keystone or Natty). When I moved to FL after graduation, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Tampa has a Yuengling brewery, which means Florida has a ton of places that have Yuengling. However, whenever I visit MA (my original home state), I always lament about the lack of it. My friends inevitably ask "Ying-ling? Is that Chinese?"

Reported because the idea that anyone would drink Heineken is offensive.
