So, an object large enough to create an earth sized crater smashes into Jupiter, going completely unnoticed until after the impact and it's just "neat"? I realize Jupiter is some 400 million miles from Earth and about 11 times its diameter, but shouldn't we be able to detect something this big before it happens? NASA wasn't even remotely aware of the impact until someone who just happened to be spying Jupiter gave them a heads up. Sounds like our NEO search funding needs a boost.

Well, if the comet hit Jupiter, it's orbit might very well not come near Earth at any point. We still don't know where all PHOs are, but this probably wasn't one of them.

Well, you said most comets could easily be in line with Earth in the near future, which is to say that the majority of comets have a high probability of being in line with earth in the near futuree. I mean, that's obviously not what you wanted to say, but it's what the words mean.

Could and have are completely different words. It seems you have a reading comprehension problem, so I drew you a picture.

is not necessarily true. The same comet could be on an orbit that would intercept earth at some point in the near future. How are we to know if we don't even know it's there?

Pedantry aside, though, you're wrong anyway. It is not necessarily true that a comet that crosses Jupiter's orbit won't hit Earth - but that's not what I said. "might very well not" is also a statement about probability. I'm not saying it couldn't come close to Earth, I'm saying it's unlikely - that most comets that pass through Jupiter's orbit do not pass close to the Earth.
I like the diagram, though.
