Math and statistics. I didn't quite see the point in answering a question you never asked. Would you like me to now speculate on (a lack of) future job opportunities?

Play poker.

At any rate, imagine someone posted about the lottery being a boon to the poor because someone has to win. You post that, while someone will win, and it'll be useful to that one person, the aggregate expected value to the poor people wagering results in a net loss for nearly everyone.

Now imagine that someone repeatedly replies that someone has to win, links news articles showing winner's pictures, and so on.

Do you really want to be that person?

I just think that it's faintly hilarious that someone would dismiss someone else's opinions on racial and social problems because of their racial or social status.

I read the first line and kind of went "woah, that's totally off the mark." Kind of like if you asked someone what their sex life was like, and the first thing they said was that they'd visted a gun store and - what? No. That's not right.

No one is qualified to really judge the specific situation, much less we, the internet.

I don't think anyone here is actually saying that they're qualified to judge. Except Anna.

Look, the point is that it's not a good idea to be dismissive of the problem because we can conjure up an idea of colourblindness. It's also not a good idea to be angry and all vindictive about it, but rather to get people to examine their own perceptions of other people and question their own subconscious motivations.

I'm trying not to be dismissive, but I'm also trying to avoid snap-judging the situation as police racism. Snap-judgments like that are what got Gates into strife in the first place. He assumed he was targeted because of his race - when he may or may not have been, I don't know - and acted accordingly.

The thing I think we're talking about now is how Anna is a self-righteous cnut. At least, that's what I think BD is saying. I wouldn't want to say that about Anna, but only because I'm afraid of her ******.

I agree, it's ludicrous. It's like dismissing the opinion of which tampon feels best just because the person offering the opinion is a man.

Hm. There are certain types of Cambridge people whom I find really irritating. I mean, I sometimes can tell someone is from Cambridge within the first few minutes of meeting them--that's not everyone, obviously but there is a type and I see them in the more affluent parts of the city. It combines this ultra-self-righteous PC bullsh*t (and this is from someone who is pretty PC) with this absolute classist, elitist lifestyle. It's like people who think they don't value money because they were willing to take 100K decrease in their pay and complain about excessive consumption even though they have three separate residents. I don't know. Maybe Smash can articulate more why they are annoying.

I was pissed when they eliminated rental control, yo. And all these working class families had to move out of Cambridge and people still call it the People's Republic of Cambridge all because they still wear lots of buttons and eat Vegan food.

I grew up in a very white state and don't care about being around specific types of people on principle alone. But when you live in an area that has more people of color (Boston is a majority POC city), I prefer more integrated areas. And wherever I live, even in the part of Somerville I live in now, I prefer living in mixed neighborhoods--both ethnically and socioeconomically, while also working in those communities.

C'mon anna...thats Prejudice and profiling right there....

Not saying you're wrong or anything but really......

I'm sorry to say that I think pretty much everyone on the planet is a racist, to some extent or another. I'm married to an Indian, and i still definately have negative views about some 'races'.

the difference between some people and their racism (imo), is that some of us know it is wrong as soon as the thought comes into our heads, and do our best to supress those unwelcome thoughts, rather than use them as an excuse to judge .

To think that the cops or the neighbour or anyone else is exempt from racism is alsmost the definition of sticking your head in the sand.

Discussion became rapidly polarized... as it often does about race. It makes me really sad, personally, that we can't talk about race without one side being racist privileged *****, and the other side being self-righteous privileged *****, and it's also kind of weird for me to be acting moderately about something.

It's also a wonderful opportunity to put off a paper.

Oh, you mean "self actualization theater"? I, too, find this annoying. The people who say things like "we lead an uncomplicated life on our house boat and have time to enjoy our family"? I fear I lack the tact to not mostly respond to anything they say with either "give me a fucking break" or "you should go feed people in Bangladesh then, if it's so important to you. Why are you wasting your time being General Council for Biogen? You just killed a child through your lack of action. I'm sorry too. That's two now."

The good part is that you can get them to snap into feral bile spitting or abject frigidity pretty quickly if you care to.

No, but my original statement wasn't as general as the lottery being a boon to the poor as a whole. If the original person said the lottery was a boon for one, specific, named person, it wouldn't be a proper counter to state "Well it results in an overall loss for everyone else!" That's great and true and all, but it in no way proves or even mildly shows that it wasn't useful for that one poor person.

I pointed it out that it was ridiculous to assume the call was only made because the people were black. Anna's reply was that I was trying to pretend that racism doesn't exist. No. It does. I never said anything to the contrary because only a special kind of idiot would even imply something like that. The prevalence and existence of racism in a certain area does not allow the assumption that any 911 call made was fueled by racism simply because the "criminals" were black. Particularly given the constant evidence to the contrary in the one specific situation I'm talking about. The judicial system being fucked up and the behavior of the officer on that day doesn't mean that Lucia Whalen was racist.

Great, so now we've settled that there is essentially no evidence that the woman who actually made the call (the one woman we were talking about) did so because of racist thoughts when she saw two mean, scary black men breaking into the house.

I'm glad we figured that out as a team.

Do you know their Lucia's exact vantage point? The details they she saw? If they she would have been able to see that other woman (the woman in his example) as clearly? That they she wouldn't have called the cops on a young white male - maybe this is sexism instead of racism?

No?

No, but the fact that the person one doesn't make the decision to play a good one retroactively, and the fact (let's stipulate there was one here) that this arrest wasn't the direct result of the color of Gates skin doesn't mean that it isn't usually the case.

This case is meaningless in the abstract. There is no way to establish the counter factual case. Would the police have been called were this random WASP Harvard Prof #19? We'll never know. You study statistics, so let's look at them. While it's a diverse faculty, most Harvard Profs are white guys. While many don't reside in Cambridge, some do. I'm too lazy to research this, but heuristically, I don't think it's much of a stretch for us to stipulate that in the last 100 years more white men then black men have taught at Harvard while living nearby. Let's say, conservatively, twice as many. Let's also stipulate that there is no genetic predisposition for Caucasian men to have doors that fail less often. Let's also stipulate that the probability of some white prof having to jiggle his door to get in, or break a window, or whatever other attention attracting act having occurred in the last 100 years is greater than 99%.

How many of them have had police show up? Guessing, I'd think a few. How many of them have been handcuffed and taken to jail.

None.

That's where we are if you really want to try and make a determination here as to the likelihood of race mattering.

No one's arguing it's 1959. My black neighbor doesn't get pulled over daily for driving his Porche Boxter home from work (although he should, he's a douchebag), but he tells me it's happened. I doubt it's to elicit sympathy, as I tell him that growing up on K street we didn't discriminate, we'd throw a brick through anyone's Porche.
