Stop reading into things to prove your own pathetic point about how absolutely awful all whiteys must treat black people. You have absolutely zero proof other than "WELL OF COURSE IT'S BECAUSE HE'S BLACK SHE WOULD NEVER HAVE DONE IT OTHERWISE. I'm psychic, so I know! :D"

If you look for racism, sexism, homophobia, you name it, you sure as fuck are going to find it everywhere.

Really? And this is the incident where you aren't gonna find it? This is people here denying certain realities that some people face. It's part of white privilege.
Hello, AnnabellaOnAlexanderAnnabella, Goblin in Disguise, I am a white male between the ages of 18 and 30 who has never engaged in any serious study of human society or race relations. Please allow me to express my uninformed opinion on a subject about which I know nothing. Having no insight in to the minority experience, I feel confident in informing you that white privilege is a myth. I learned this by watching the Colbert Report; the host of this show routinely does bits referencing and lampooning white privilege which I laugh at despite not really having a clue what's going on. I'm pretty much a giant tool.

Thanks for your time.

I....I...see the light! Thank you, white male!
My pleasure, female-or-minority. Enlightening people like you is a solemn duty which I take quite seriously.

Now, if my work here is done, I'm off to obtain a low-interest personal loan.

I don't think anyone's saying that racism doesn't exist. I just don't think that this exact case is a result of racism. Ineptitude on the part of the caller, and asshattery on the part of Gates and the officer both, but not really racism. Just because something bad happened to a black guy doesn't mean that it's a result of racial discrimination.

It really looks more like an irate cop getting fed up and arresting someone because he's had a bad day, been called out on a false alarm and the someone in question is kind of being a jerk.

But Gates' perspective is that he was a victim of racism. Why are you discounting his view of his own experience?

Plus you do realize that I work in the same town--in the court system-- that the incident took place and have experience working with the cops and court involved people in the area--which I've said adds to my suspicion.

But I forget that pales in comparison to the wisdom of the mighty white male.

Because as a white male, he has the privilege of knowing that when bad things happen to him, it's probably not because of his race.

No-one here is claiming omniscience. No-one is saying that Gates was kicking up a fuss for publicity, the same way no-one is saying that the officer was a Grand Dragon in the KKK. People here are just expressing opinions based on what they read, and trying to be even-handed about it.

This doesn't have to be about racism at all. And unless you're deliberately taking the ****, it seems retarded to dismiss other people's opinions as uninformed based on their skin colour.

The point is, for many black people (and hispanic people, too, for that matter), any confrontation with the police cannot reasonably be extricated from questions of race, even if the cop is of the same race as the person in question. The individual's cultural experience makes it about race.

I can't really say anything about that, other than it sounds stupidly counterproductive. Does race really have to be a factor in every single confrontation between ethnic minorities and the police? Even then, doesn't framing everything in the terms of racial conflict make the entire confrontation more racist?

It is counterproductive, in the same way that paranoia is counterproductive when only some people are out to get you instead of everyone.

Yes...just ask Obama.

What do you people think about Barry extending an offer to both of these guys to the WH for a beer? Wonder what kind of beer? Cans or frozen mugs?

All in all is anyone really surprised Obama said this? He did attend the esteemed rev. Wrights church for 20yrs after all.

None of those things are mutually exclusive with racism. Racism doesn't even have to be present with pitchforks, slurs, or even just behavioral discrimination. It's insidious, and exists in perceptions that we might not even recognize, and I think that a lot of people are making an extremely complex issue into some bifurcated entity. Is it possible that this isn't a case of Gate's race influencing the cops response? Yeah. Should that stop us from questioning whether or not racism was present? No. It's a good thing to be vigilant against this stuff. It's ridiculously stupid to conclude that racism influenced behavior, much more so that it was the primary or only condition of the arrest, but to dismiss Gate's behavior as purely paranoid or unprovoked, on the basis of the police report, calling Gate's a liar simply to agree with what is invariably a biased opinion meant to justify the actions of the police reeks of willful blindness.

Seriously... simplifying this to racism or not racism is just way too well, simplified. Situations like this should cause you angst when thinking about it, making you question justice and equality and all of that good **** and cause you to engage in internal monologue about the topic and possibly even talk about it with other people, allowing you to share experiences and debate about this crap, hopefully resulting in a broadened opinion for lots of dudes of various races, rather than some divisive issue that only deepens differences.

Considering you know little about my career path or my work experience other than the field I work in, I find it incredibly amusing that you're so certain of this. Kind of like how I was so certain about the watermelon thing, since you insist on bringing that one up.

Also, being a social worker is not some higher calling that automatically elevates you above the common citizen. It's a job, same as any other. It's a platform of opportunity, not a label of success. As a middle aged woman who claims to be well-educated, I think you'd realize such and stop behaving like a 5 year old. What's next... can your daddy beat up my daddy?

See, there you go, passive aggressive. Struck a chord, huh, hon? Maybe you shouldn't go around making personal insults about people and then act like you are taking the higher road.

Why do you just admit that I threaten you and that's why you feel the constant need to try to break me down or puff your chest and make yourself seem better than me? If anyone here is passive aggressive, it's you. Worse, you do it with the maturity of a child.

Your hypocrisy is amazing. So basically you bait me by making some personal insults and then castigate me for acting in kind--in the same thread.

You go make yourself feel better, BD. Pretend that I'm threatened by your crudely formed, semi-literate arguments. Continue to maintain that your maturity includes random little passive aggressive sniping about people. Never take ownership of your own ****.

Also, you are a dumbass. That's not passive aggressively stated either. :P
