so I called the police.

Boy, do I feel silly now.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/07/harvard.html

Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., one of the nation's pre-eminent African-American scholars, was arrested Thursday afternoon at his home by Cambridge police investigating a possible break-in. The incident raised concerns among some Harvard faculty that Gates was a victim of racial profiling.

Police arrived at Gates’s Ware Street home near Harvard Square at 12:44 p.m. to question him. Gates, director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard, had trouble unlocking his door after it became jammed.

He was booked for disorderly conduct after “exhibiting loud and tumultuous behavior,” according to a police report. Gates accused the investigating officer of being a racist and told him he had "no idea who he was messing with,'' the report said.

It being Cambridge, I expect to be caught in a good deal of candlelight vigil traffic for the next few days.

You think Varus would have made a thread entitled "This is why you should ban automatic weapons!" and whine about being shot by some black man?

I used to enjoy Harvard square, but the class of gutter punks hanging out by the T has really gone down to such lows as of late that the smell alone is enough to make me turn around & go back home.

That & I never have the patience to wait in line at Bartley's for one of his fine burgers.

Oh, Omega. You should go live in the suburbs. You sound like a young republican.

I haven't noticed much of a change. I used to know some of the kids involved in that circle through work, including when some of the gang recruited kids killed that girl from Hawaii. I met the victim and some of the kids who did it and some of the ancillary kids. There has always been sketchy stuff going on with some of the kids down there. Other kids were just misfits and kids looking to get high and find a place to fit in. Alot of them are ***** kids who are runaways. But they've always been on the rougher side.

I live in Brookline now.

I miss Kenmore, the Berkely kids would serenade you for your pocket change & then sell you weed.

But trust me, these Jewish pan-handlers here are much more punk than their counterparts on the other side of the river.

However, when I worked near central square I found it's denizens to be the most intimidating. The halfway house there let's the crazy people out during the day, & they will bite you.

And steal your french fries, if you risk going to the Wendy's.

Also, i dont know what this mean: '=

(I was kidding, mostly, about the kids in the pitt.)

If the story is accurate, this guy is an idiot, who turned an ordinary encounter into his own arrest/humiliation.

He could have acted like a citizen who was grateful for his neighbors vigilance
and the police response....but, apparently was instead an asshat.

Especially concerning is the part where he pursues the cops out of the house being verbally abusive (this would be the part where a cop would be concerned about being cold-cocked) & would be the first or second step on the
"escalation scale" (depending on raised voice, proximity, gesture etc.)

Sounds like maybe he had a 400 year old ax to grind.

again, this is all based on the accuracy of the story

Sounds like he went off the deep-end... although I suppose having the police called on you when you're trying to get into your own house would **** a lot of people off. And I don't know about "neighbor's vigilance" as you put it; his neighbors called the police on him. If they didn't even recognize him (or even his color), I'm guessing it really was a gut reaction of "Oh, look at the black guy try to break into that house" more than "Some other black guy is trying to get into the black guy's house!"

He [allegedly] asked for the officer's name and badge number several times and never got it. That's a pretty simple request that should have been answered immediately.

The other question, of course, is where was the neighbor's concern when his front door was broken in the first place?

The IPCC (UK obviously) is looking into complaints of this nature, that is, the failure of officers to furnish suspects and offenders with basic details such as name and number, which is information that simply should be provided on request.

Much of it stems from the G20 riots, with many police officers wearing full face balaclavas underneath their PO helmets.

Also: when the police officer arrived, Dr Gates was already inside his house, with his luggage sitting there. It's pretty rare for people to break into one's home to bring stuff.

Well obviously any police officer would establish whether the person on scene is the house holder or not.

I fail to see your point?

Because a thief would never think to knock the owner of the house out and stuff him in the closet while talking to the police.
He also showed the officer both his DL and his University ID.

What more is one supposed to do to convince teh law that they are properly residing within their own property?

Both of which were picture IDs, by the way.

I bet if the Professor had an assault weapon, he would still have been arrested.

Well, after being shot.

It was a typo. I'm saying if Harvard Square is too much of a hood for you, with its American Apparel and Charles Hotel, then your only option is the 'burbs. You can go to Cohasset and complain about the disaffected youths there.

I lived near Jackson Square and Forest Hills for years. I worked in shelters. I knew the guys from those halfway houses. Omega, you are a giant @#%^. Jesus, Central is not intimidating.
