Old news is old, but... Comcast drops MSNBCFollow

I couldn't find any "unbiased" articles on this; most are either tinfoil hats from liberal blogs or shouts of glee from conservatives. It seems like for the past two years, Comcast has been cutting MSNBC from its line-up in various states. I personally just noticed it when I went up north to MA for vacation. The station that has MSNBC simply has a message saying something like "this channel is no longer provided by Comcast, please call if you have questions." The kicker: when you call, they give you the channel for Fox News instead.

Granted, CNN is still offered... but seriously? I always liked MSNBC for its political discussions and talking about issues. Sure, there are far-left liberals (hello Keith), but at least it gives an interesting view and an appropriate counter to the right-wing talking heads on other channels (hello Hannity). It seems very disappointing that it would be dropped; I feel other channels like the home shopping network or televangelist programs would have fewer viewers.

First it was a PBS station, and now Comcast has moved its MSNBC news channel from 42 to higher channels that require a digital cable box.

While some subscribers are claiming it smacks of an anti-liberal conspiracy, Comcast officials disagreed.

They said that it is all part of the digital revolution in television, and that it is only designed to give the cable company's viewers better service.

MSNBC was available only to subscribers with the full basic service, so those who have the limited basic service would not have noticed because they never had the channel.

Those who have full basic service can now get one free cable box which will give them access to channels 83 and 185, where MSNBC has been moved, said Elaine Lunkes, Comcast's director of community and commercial development.

Sounds kind of dumb but not as dumb as at first blush.

I don't get it anymore either. I hadn't really thought about it until you posted this. We have digital cable, but it's the limited package, so our channels don't go above 100.

Eh, I'm ok with CNN, but it would be nice to still be able to get MSNBC.

I'm frequently dumbfounded at how much attention is given - on this forum and also established political websites - to cable news networks. Who watches this crap? Does any serious-minded person get their news from these sources? They're barely a step above local nightly news. The only television news I have any respect for are the hour-long national network shows, like World News Tonight or Frontline, but I haven't even watched those since Peter Jennings died. The only thing I watch cable news for is live video coverage of happening events, like election night or 9/11.

I only watched the cable outlets during the debates (mainly for the high def feeds). But presumably someone watches 'em.
