The gang should obviously be arrested and prosecuted and yes, if hate crime legislation is on the books, applied to them.

What I mean is that it's very difficult to get riled up emotionally about a story that ended with one severely injured, but living casualty with a good prognosis.

Besides, don't you think a simple semi-auto pistol would serve much of the same purpose, or even better, a shotgun? I'd think that fifty dudes could subdue a single guy regardless of whether the gun was automated; if the intimidation doesn't work, auto or semi, he's getting beat down.

It is a little unfair. It's not a punishment for them; it's an ostensible prevention, but the vicious beating, gangrape and murder of the entire family just didn't happen this time.

I think he's too stupid and devoid of logic to be very old. I'd guess he's almost 20. Unless he's REALLY old; like walk into a Holocaust museum and kill a security guard before he's too old to do it old.
