Attorney General Lisa Madigan has decided to run for her AG post again in 2010 instead of running for governor or senator. I had really hoped she'd run for senator since, despite her being the probably front-runner for governor, I'm not sure if Illinois would have gone for the governor being the daughter of the House Speaker. We in the Prairie State love our dynasty governments (this just in: Dennis Hastert's son is running for Hastert's old seat) but I'm sure there's limits to that.

But senator? Would have been a piece of cake. Now the Democratic candidate will probably be Alexi Giannoulias which means that I'm gonna have to vote for probable GOP candidate Mark Kirk. Smiley: mad

...or you could do what I do in those situation and write-in your own candidate. I voted Cthulu for mayor of my town this year.

Sadly, Illinois doesn't allow write-ins unless they're pre-registered. I doubt Cthulu pre-registered.

The GOP sigh of relief is kind of amusing:
Quote:
Republican state Sen. Kirk Dillard kicked off his run for governor in Hinsdale today, where Madigan was a topic of discussion.

"She's been a good attorney general and if she wants to stay there, that's fine," Dillard said. "With Lisa Madigan out of the race, it clearly makes this at least an even, if not a Republican-tilting field. Personally, I'm glad she's not going to be my opponent in the general election. I believe my chances are better with Pat Quinn or someone else than Lisa Madigan. I look forward to having Lisa Madigan as attorney general when I'm the governor."

Dillard clearly forgot about his own party's announced candidate for attorney general: DuPage County State's Atty. Joe Birkett.

That's cause you don't know how much I srsly haet Giannoulias.

Mark Kirk is announcing his GOP run for the Senate. Can't say I blame him for not wanting the governor's mansion. He's pro-choice, was a principle player in the 2005 Stem Cell Research act and has supported pro-environmental legislation including the recent Cap & Trade bill.

He's also under attack for not being a real Republican so it'll be interesting to see if the GOP shoots themself in the foor by scuttling his candidacy.

Aren't you aware of Giannoulias' clout and general belovedness? He's got a direct line to the U of I admissions board!

When a politically connected Greek Orthodox priest wanted help getting the daughter of a family friend into the University of Illinois, he reached out to a campaign adviser to state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias.

Giannoulias' political director came through, getting the applicant into the university's secret admissions system for students with clout, and she was plucked from her spot on the university's waiting list and admitted.

Four months later, the Greek Orthodox priest aided Giannoulias with a fundraiser that netted at least $120,000, the Tribune has learned.

Knock that **** off. You know better than thinking that the fucking individual ethics and positions of the random white guy you vote for is more important than the structural value of party distribution. Particularly in the Senate.

I've heard various rumors that L. Madigan and Obama don't play well together, has that been a local meme in Corruptionville?

Not that I know of. I think that Mlle Madigan is avoiding the governor's seat because, in no special order:
(A) Her being governor while her father is House Speaker may not wash,
(B) Her running opens her father to allegations that he's fucking with Quinn's agenda to sabotage Quinn's reelection chances,
(C) This is a shitty climate to run a state government in &
(D) Quinn is still relatively well-liked versus Blagojevich who no one could wait to get rid of.

I think she's passing on the senate because she never wanted the job anyway and was going through the motions of considering it just to be polite. She didn't try to petition for Obama's vacant seat either and handwaved off speculation that she was in consideration. Of course her hostile relationship with Blagojevich there complicated things. Anyway, I think she wants to run things rather than be 1% of a legislative body. I'm still disappointed though.

Well, they stole it a couple hundred years ago. Sorry you didn't realize it was gone until now. Smiley: frown

Yeah I didn't know they were the prairie state, that's the first I've heard of it.

We have the "Cornhusker State", which just shows that without our college football there truly would be nothing to do here.

In related news, since I know you all hang on word from the Land of Lincoln, Roland Burris said he's not going to try to run for his senate seat next year.

I wonder he's going to do with the $900 his fundraisers have collected so far?

Washington Post wrote:
Illinois Rep. Mark Kirk (R) will not run for the open seat of Sen. Roland Burris (D) in 2010, a stunning reversal from just 48 hours ago when Kirk signaled to National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (Texas) that he would make the race.

Kirk's decision, a blow to Senate Republicans' chances in Illinois, came in the wake of Burris' formal retirement this afternoon.

It also followed a meeting of the Illinois Republican congressional delegation on Thursday in which his colleagues refused to back Kirk in a primary against Illinois Republican Party Chairman Andy McKenna due, in large part, to his vote in favor of President Barack Obama's climate change bill.

Hehe. Cornyn & Co. are trying to do damage control now and convince Kirk to run after all. He's the only Republican who'd stand a chance at winning the seat.

Edit: And now McKenna's standing aside and keeping his yap shut so Kirk will run again.
