(There are still some flat-earthers to this day that believe all the pictures of the Earth from the Moon were faked alongside the moon landing to destroy the Church.

Honestly, that's dumb, because in classics the sphere is considered a more perfect shape than a disk, so if you're going to believe in a perfect god making a perfect world, a nice round globe is the way to go.)

Complicating the "stock" definition of speciation is that some hybrids, especially plants, skip over sexual reproduction entirely and just make babies from their roots. Peppermint is a hybrid between spearmint and watermint that does not reproduce through seeds, but instead clones itself and spreads through root systems. However, peppermint was initially regarded as its own species and has its own genus/species name, instead of being classified as the hybrid it really is.

Geocentrism wasn't really a religious theory. Obviously there were those who accepted geocentrism out of hubris but, celestially speaking, early astromoners were hobbled by a lack of optical instruments and an embryonic understanding of planetary orbits. Early heliocentric models assumed that planetary orbits had to be circular (which makes sense if you assume the sun is exerting constant pull on the bodies) but no models using circular orbits actually matched what was going on in the sky. It wasn't until eliptical orbits were observed, proven and worked into the model that heliocentrism could make sense.

At no point since the ancient Greeks has anyone seriously believed that the world was flat. The whole Flat Earth concept is a purely modern phenomenon.

The real issue was over geocentrism and heliocentrism, and it wasn't as big of an issue as people make out of it.

After the heliocentric model took precedence, only delusional religious nutjobs still clung to the old model.

There are still, to this day, religious groups that believe in the geocentric model...

In one interview Palin couldn't name ONE Supreme court decision that she had issues with, not even by context (versus xxy vs state of zzz). My 18 year old daughter came up with the "bong hits 4 Jesus" case when asked the same question. My 22 year old son came up with the one about the "ten commandments" display at the courthouse. Fresh in my mind at the time was the DC gun ban ruling. My wife recalled one about assisted suicide.

I know she's a Governor of a state, but not being at least barely aware of a FEW of the more significant SCOTUS decisions demostrates a lack of (broad National) knowledge. This is unaccepatble for a Presidential candidate.

I think it's a mistake to shrug her off as stupid, although she has certainly presented herself as ill-prepared and superficial. I think Joph is pretty close to the mark when he describes her as intellectually incurious.

For all that she does have a knack for putting her finger on the pulse of her base, and connecting with them in a way that is obviously electrifying.

You may say, "But, Samira! Her base is also stupid, so of course she relates to them, and they to her!", to which I reply, "She and they are no less dangerous for that."

Republicans are disappointed with her, except the rabid base. Realistically, if you resign from your one major post after two and a half years with some rambling statement, coupled with another complaint about how everyone is so mean to her (MEANER THAN ANY OTHER POLITICIAN), you don't look ready to be the President. It's like college all over again. Can't she just stick to something?

This is impressive. I bet she totally loses in 2008.

Well, that's true.

The media and Democrats are terrified of Palin.
Folks on the right keep saying that but I think we both know it's whistling past the graveyard. Remember how "terrified" the Left was of her during the 2008 election? She's exceptionally good at firing up her base, I'll give her that. Unfortunately for the Right, that comes at a price of alienating the middle. McCain's polling with moderate/independents went down with Palin on the ticket, including with female voters. Elections are won in the middle and she has zero credibility there.

I could see her as a great money-raiser and standard bearer for your side. As a national candidate? Not so much.
Quote:
The Democrats in Alaska have gone after her for 15 different, fabricated, ethics violations. Over 2 million tax payer dollars spent and not one charge has stuck.
The Anchorage Daily News ran a story the day before her speech pinning the ethics suit taxpayer price tag at $296,000. Two thirds of that was for Troopergate in which she was found to have violated the state ethics rules and the next biggest pricetag went to her putting her kids onto the state's tab when flying them around. Palin settled that one when she reimbursed the state for ~$3,000.
Quote:
There are two possibilities for why Palin resigned. Someone has something on her or she's going to change residences and run for the senate next year preparing her for a presidential bid in 2008. By then the market should be around 5k and the jobless rate will be over 12% nationally.
I sincerely doubt that she'll run for the Senate and be happy as one voice out of 100 as a junior senator in the minority party. She obviously chaffed as second banana to McCain and that was for the #2 spot in the nation. No, if she goes for anything she's going to make a direct play for the Oval Office and, I'd expect, fail miserably.

She's going to hold quarter- to half-terms as governor in Idaho, Minnesota, Wyoming and S. Dakota before finally getting her Certificate in Governorship.

I have a feeling she's going to hit the circuit for a bit and end up gunning for Ann Coulter's niche. I hope, fervently, that the two of them end up having it out in a last-crazy-*****-standing free-for-all.

Well, you hold on to that dream. Let it keep you warm at night.

As a correction to my above post, the "kids' airfare" thing was #3 on the list and she reimbursed the state $8,000 not $3,000.

Well, according to people who were there, running the campaign, it was because she was not getting star billing.

She wanted to give a concession speech. She insisted that the VP candidate got to give a concession speech.

I can see why she felt that way, in a totally self-centered context. She drew the big crowds, she had the star power, etc.

But ffs he was the candidate. It was his race to concede. She wouldn't have been there at all had he not had the astoundingly poor judgment to tap her (so to speak) for the VP role.

Heh, did you read the Vanity Fair article? It said that McCain's people only found out that she was planning on giving a speech when they went to load McCain's speech into the Teleprompter and found Palin's speech already loaded up and waiting Smiley: laugh

I can easily believe it. I'm sure she just assumed it was her place to usurp McCain's last gasp.

Like I said, totally self centered.

There's just something so narcissistic about her, with her martyr complex and her attention whoring.

Not sure what you mean by media, at this point. Frankly it seems to be an all-encompassing term for "the 99.5% of the population that dares to disagree with me and Rush."

I feel the way I do based upon Palin's own words. Unless those were somehow manipulated by the wicked liberal media.
