Man picking a top 3 is just dishonoring all the rest, everyone named has done a lot for the world so my vote is for all of em. (yes i took the cheap way out.:P)

I'd say the word "untimely" to me indicates that I don't know what they would have created after this point and judging by their prior work, it could be something so new that a whole new field would emerge. Although John Denver and Buddy Holly both died in plane crashes, it is likely we know roughly what kinds of music John Denver would have continued to play, whereas Buddy Holly could, perhaps, have gone anywhere.

Further, if they essentially took their own life by poor lifestyle choices, in some sense it was their time to go. Jim Morrison was only 27. He certainly had a great deal of time ahead of him during which he could have done more. But instead he chose self destructive behavior.

I'd say the word "untimely" indicates that they died of anything other than natural causes brought on by old age.

But your definition justifies my adding of Paul Newman to the discussion, so I'll just leave it be.
