Since yesterday afternoon, I've been trying to elucidate why Michael Jackson's passing does--and should--in some way matter, and I have been having a hard time doing it because it's been such a long time since he's been at his peak that it's easy to forget why he was ever relevant in the first place. Then I watched last night's
So You Think You Can Dance and
Nigel Lythgoe managed to put into words (around 5:54) the thoughts that have been fluttering around the edge of my ability to verbalize.
Love his music or hate it, opine what you will about the scandals that marked his later career, he was a man who changed the face of music and dance forever in some very significant ways. He had an impact. He made a difference.
Does his passing move me personally? No, not beyond a "aww, shucks, now I'm feeling old" kind of way. But I respect the contribution he made, the innovations he brought. The passing of someone who accomplished what he did should not just be dismissed.
