I've only been half following the Mark Sanford saga. For those who have been following it even less, Governor Sanford of South Carolina was one of the pointmen in the GOP war against the stimulus. He said that he'd refuse the money but the SC general assembly (or whatever they call their version of the state legislative branch) passed a law requiring him to take the money. He fought it in court and lost. So it goes.

So the state legislative session just ended and Sanford is... gone. His staff says they don't know where he is, his security detail isn't answering questions, even his wife shrugs. The guy misses Father's Day without a word. No one was in a panic about it but no one had an answer either. After three or four days, the answer is "He wanted to get away and work on some stuff he had set aside. Some writing and things." After five days, it's "He's off walking the Appalachian Trail somewhere... we don't know exactly where but he'll be back in a couple days."

I won't pretend that I much cared about that aside from rolling my eyes at someone who loses a fight and has to run away from home to go sulk for a week. I got over that shit around age 14. Apparently SC's Lt. Governor is livid about it, since he wasn't informed, no emergency powers were vested in him and he was plainly told that he could not have any communication with the governor while he was out finding God or burying a dead prostitute or whatever one does along the Trail. No, what amused me was someone mentioning that this dope was supposed to be one of the rising GOP national stars, standard bearer for fiscal responsibility and presidential candidate for 2012.

President? Seriously? Can anyone take this guy seriously now? I can imagine the commercials now: "When the 3:00 AM Phone Calls comes, Mark Sanford will be saying 'This job is hard... I need to drop off the radar for a week'." Smiley: rolleyesSmiley: laugh

Between this and the crash & burn of Senator Ensign's future national ambitions, the GOP's gonna need some more stars to rise up.

Reminds me -- just a little bit -- of the time (August 2003) when Democratic members of the Texas legislature played hooky to prevent a quorum because of a particular bill they were opposed to but didn't have the votes to block. Apparently they went to Oklahoma so that even the Texas Rangers (not the baseball team) couldn't come get them and drag them back to the state capital.

Politicians suck.

Haha, I remember that. The Texas legislature is an eternal source of entertainment.

On the other hand, everyone knew where they were. This guy debunked and didn't even empower anyone to govern in his (unscheduled) absence.

He was hiking the Appalacian Trail in Argentina, apparently.

His weekend hike turned into a week-long jaunt to Buenos Aires.

The question arises now: Who exactly paid for his plane fare to South America? And wtf did he think he was doing not telling anyone where he was going?

His wife is being quietly PO'd about the whole thing, so speculations about adulterous vacations abound.

I think you mean bare, unless he's a bear in the NixNotian sense.

Or the Appalachian sense, for that matter.

The US Embassy in Argentina is now WTFing because he didn't check in with them, which is apparently the protocol for governors visiting abroad.

It's certainly something I would encourage people to do before being elected, or after retiring from office.

At the very least empower your lieutenant governor to make decisions in your absence.

Yeah, the big deal isn't so much that he went. Fine, take a week in Argentina. Probably hurt your pride to have your own legislature override your veto and all that.

But he completely ignored the protocols for the head of a governing body going AWOL - he didn't tell anyone he was going, didn't tap his 2nd in command to take over officially, didn't tell his wife or kids kids he'd be gone for Father's Day (officially earning him Worst Dad In The World), didn't tell the embassy of the country he was visiting that he was in town, and didn't have an action plan proscribed in case something happened to him, like a plan crash.

At least Bush let everyone know when he was going to visit the ranch at Crawford.

No one stopped him.

Personally, I wouldn't let my husband disappear for a week without knowing, where, how to contact, when to expect, etc etc. For a Governor to choose to do so, sans ANY notification to his office, doesn't speak too highly of the guys level of responsibility.

It was a nut move. I don't expect him to be run out of the governor's mansion or anything but I suspect it effectively killed any presidental ambitions he may have had. It's hard to argue firm judgement and responsibility when your opponent (primary or general) can just say "Yeah, and remember that time you ran off to Argentina without telling your staff or wife and they had to lie and make up some story about you being in the mountains of Georgia while your Lt. Governor wondered why he couldn't contact you?"

The Christian Science Monitor wrote:
What began as a story of a quirky Southern governor going on a mystery walkabout took a more serious turn Wednesday morning, with reports of impeachment talk bubbling out of South Carolina’s capital.

The disappearing act by Mark Sanford, a gubernatorial hero of the GOP who resurfaced after a five-day incommunicado absence, has not played well, even among members of his own party. The impeachment rumblings, first cited by Southern Political Report editor Tom Baxter, are more grave, though. In a bulletin Wednesday morning about the impeachment talks, Mr. Baxter quotes “well-placed sources” in Columbia.

The governor’s trip – taken together with the bitter intraparty battles over the budget in South Carolina and Sanford’s profile as a potential GOP presidential contender – is raising questions about whether he committed “serious misconduct” as chief executive, which is an impeachable offense under South Carolina’s constitution.

Complaints are that the governor turned off his cellphone without making plans for succession and that he apparently misled his staff about his whereabouts. According to his office, he had told them he was going hiking on the Appalachian Trail and instead traveled to Argentina, where he’s said to have taken quiet drives along the beach.

Politico wrote:
South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, his eyes red, admitted to having an extramarital affair Wednesday with an Argentine woman.

"I've been unfaithful to be my wife," Sanford said at a state capitol news conference.

It began very innocently," he explained, saying that developed into an adultrous relationship in the past year.

Sanford said he was resigning his post as Chairman of the Republican Governor's Association.

Sanford's admission caps an extraordinary week in which he was revealed to having been in Argentina and not, as his staff said, hiking on the Appalachian trail.

Before disclosing his relationship, Sanford apologized profusely to a number of family and friends.

"I've let down a lot of people -- that's the bottom line," Sanford said.

In what were at times rambling remarks, Sanford delved into the nature of sin and explained his affinity for "adventure trips."

He requested a "zone of privacy" for his family.
