So now North Korea is taunting the US, accusing us of having nuclear weapons in South Korea and threatening to bomb the US. It is enriching uranium and making big noise about being angry at US sanctions:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/06/13/AR2009061300636.html?hpid=topnews

I don't know if the chances are high. I think if NK went really aggressive, China would smack that country down b/c there already signs that they are weary of what NK is doing. But you know, I don't know really what to think. It was always funny, in a ****** up way, that we were insisting on going to Iraq b/c of Weapons of Mass Destruction while NK was saying they had nuclear weapons pointed at the west coast.

All in all, though, to be perfectly honest, I don't know what to think of this situation. I wonder what the chances/circumstances that would draw us into a war with North Korea.

This is an op-ed's take on it:

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1903717,00.html?iid=tsmodule

Quote:
U.S. officials are concerned that political instability inside the Pyongyang regime may raise the danger of confrontation. "Dear Leader" Kim Jong Il has been weakened by a stroke suffered late last year, his 26-year old heir apparent is not yet ready to take the reins and the North Korean military is eager to maintain its preeminence in the coming political succession. "Any time you have a combination of this behavior of doing provocative things in order to excite a response — plus succession questions — you have a potentially dangerous mixture," said U.S. Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair on Monday.

Despite the rising tensions, however, a number of factors militate against a new chapter being opened in the Korean War. South Korea, backed by the U.S., doesn't want war, because the North has some 13,000 artillery tubes aimed at Seoul and the more than 10 million South Koreans living within 30 miles of the DMZ. North Korea, backed by China, doesn't want war because if it comes, it all but guarantees the collapse of Kim's regime, which is also the family business.

I don't think we'd actually have to do anything about it, between Japan, China, and South Korea spells an ***-kickin' and Crazy Kim knows it.

If North Korea goes to war it'd probably affect me more than you. Australia is in a precarious regional situation, what with our relations with China and Japan. Any conflict over Korea is going to drag us into it. If it doesn't we'll hop on board anyway because we want to feel important.

Also, North Korea is crazy.

Edit: I should make North Korea my Cato signature. End every post with "Also, North Korea is crazy. Carthago delenda est."

China doesn't want a larger U.S. presence in south korea or an occupied North Korea. I suspect at some point short of war, a few million chinese footsoldiers would go have a talk with good ol Kim Jungle.

Kim talks alot of junk, but according to the article I read yesterday NK doesn't have the technology to make the nuclear material fit on their missiles. Anyways, I agree with Kao and I think China will end up sending a few million foot soldiers to adjust Kim's attitude.

I read an article that made a convincing case that Kim Jong has actually been dead for a while now and the regime is using body doubles to keep a hold its legitimacy. It would explain a lot, like why he never comes out in public and why the nation is becoming increasingly nutso.

Hey, it worked for Strom Thurmond. He really died sometime back in the eighties, but one of his aides stuck a 2x4 down the back of his shirt to keep him upright.

FYI, japan is only allowed to have a self-defense force due to WW2, and they can only use it if they are directly attacked.

The problem is we don't want a larger US presence in SK or NK either and the Chinese know that. This just ties us up in a bad situation. We can't really do anything because we don't want to be left holding the bag but we can't really let thim sit there and keep talking about nuclear war either.

Yeah, but iirc their self-defense force includes Godzilla and assorted giant robots.

This.

Also, NK's last nuke tests failed. They haven't been feeding their scientists enough to keep them calculating right. They are also, if I recall correctly, using English Windows computers because they refuse to acknowledge there are operating systems made just for South Korea.

That still doesn't change the fact that they need to be attacked by NK before they can do anything.
