Honestly no, I'm not sure. I've questioned it too. The on-board computer calculates it. I'm gonna push him to measure it himself. I've seen the display. It calculates an average every so often, so you're not getting up-to-the-minute info, but it usually hangs around 37mpg.

Ohhh the on board mpg indicator is flaky in many cars. Even when every sensor is working perfectly I swear most manufacturers rig them to give false readings showing better mileage (to give a false sense of consumer satisfaction).

For an accurate reading you will need the old pen and paper method and keep a log of gas put in and odometer readings every time it is filled up.

I would have suggested a Saturn; years ago I drove a 2-door manual that got pretty good mileage. But The company is no more, so that probably isn't advisable anymore.

Somewhat-relevant story: the other day my mom (who has a 4-door, manual 2002 Saturn) got a hand-addressed envelope from the dealership which contained a newspaper clipping that indicated that this is the best time to buy a Saturn with minimal down payments, low monthly, etc. But there's the question of how she would trade in the current vehicle...

Oops! I'm sorry guys, as I haven't been shopping for cars for awhile (and even then I typically buy European), I confused the Honda Fit with the 2010 Honda Insight.

I like the FIT a lot, but it's overpriced relative to the Civic. You can basically get a Civic LX for what you'd pay for the base Fit. Speaking of which my parents liked the one got last year so much they bought another one a month ago. If you have to have a hatchback, the new Hyundai Elantra Touring is honestly worth a look. They've done a nice job.

Here's how I look at the options you provided:

The Fit - Bad value proposition.
Yaris - Too small and buzzy.
Focus - Resale value sucks.
Mazda 3 - possibly the most fun to drive, possibly the least fun to repair.
Kia Rio is largely a Hyundai Accent, which isn't at all a bad car if money's a big issue, but the Elantra's probably a better value.

Good luck.

Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

My 2005 Toyota Corolla gets 35mpg highway when I'm doing 60~65. If I'm doing 70-75 it drops down to ~30mpg highway.

Although.. it could also be that I've been doing a lot more non-cruise control driving since I started doing 70 regularly.

Well, new brakes, struts and a few other spiff-ups (to the tune of about $700.00) and my old Mazda is in pretty good shape. This fall when I'm due for an inspection I'll probably not pass without new tires. So, I'll be at decision point time again.

In the meantime I got this woman from the local Ford Dealership calling me daily. Smiley: oyvey

Think I may still go test drive the Mazda3, so I can test drive the Miata while I'm at it. Smiley: grin
