This doesn't bode well for the 228 people on board.

Saw that on the news just now. Looks like the weirdest thing.

They might have a chance, if the plane managed to glide to the surface and they all got out onto the inflatable thingies and then they get found within three days.

They are doomed to being cast in the most convoluted reality television program in history.

It goes down outside of radar range.

Brazil says it has launched two air force squadrons to hunt near the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha in the Atlantic Ocean, 365 kilometers (226 miles) from its coast, although the plane vanished outside the country's radar coverage.

Great, just what I need, to float around the North Atlantic for three days, clinging to a cushion filled with beer farts!

It's the mystery of the island.

It turns into a submarine. They should probably try looking for it on Sonar.

First Airbus A330 crash to my knowledge. It has redundant control runs, so an electrical issue shouldn't have been able to knock out the controls entirely. I'm thinking maybe a fuel tank explosion or something catestrophic, because there was no report of a mayday either, and the radios have redundant power supplies.

Stephen King did it better.

I bet a large mysterious craft approached it and then opened up a portion of it's hull and engulfed it, kidnapping all 200+ people on board. Starring Pierce Brosnan as "007." Summer '09.

I don't acknowledge that awful new guy as a James Bond.

I quite like him.

Only a short time has passed but if it ditched/crashed in the ocean, why no EPIRB signal? All planes have them...

Whatever mechanism that's needed to go off to activate the EPIRB could very well not have worked (it's common).

But, still to go completely dead from any kind of signal, these days, seems strange.

So true, normally these things indicate catastrophic circumstances.

Were they flying anywhere near the Bermuda triangle?

Time to get the Google World people to send the seafloor crawler along the planned flight path.

I dunno, Brosnan was pretty annoying to me as Bond. I mean, he was looking a little pudgy after spending over a year in a North Korean prison in his last outing...

It looks likely that the plane dropped out of the sky in a massive failure from all I have read on the news.

I just hope death was quick. A nightmare of mine is being on a plane that takes several minutes to crash. Call me old fashioned but I suspect that the fear of death is greater than it actually occuring (quickly). Kill me instantly, not slowly.

Poor, poor people. I feel for the families.

George Carlin quotes FTW! How is that that man had at least one thing to say about everything that could possibly happen?

According to the news, the airplane reported plane-wide malfunctions of various equipment shortly before disappearing, so the EPIRB may have broken in the lightning storm, which would explain why they haven't used it.

Yeah I saw that on the news, although it's not something you use, it's something that automatically launched when the place goes down. That doesn't mean to say it wasn't damaged by pre/post crash forces.

I suppose it should not be a surprise, debris has been found:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8079122.stm

Quote:
Brazilian aircraft searching for an Air France jet which went missing with 228 people aboard in an Atlantic storm have spotted debris on the ocean.

Plane seats and other items were sighted 650km (400 miles) north-east of Brazil's Fernando do Noronha island, the Brazilian air force said.

It could not be immediately confirmed that the debris came from the Airbus.

The jet was heading from Brazil to Paris when it vanished about four hours into its flight, early on Monday.

Air Force spokesman Jorge Amaral said the seats had been spotted by search planes early on Tuesday morning.

Also spotted were small white pieces of debris, material that may be metallic and signs of oil and kerosene, which is used as jet fuel.

I respect the desire to avoid mis-statements and false reporting, but how many other jumbo jets have disappeared in the area recently that would make it difficult to determine if these particular plane seats and other items were from the missing jet? Yeah, it's ******* confirmed.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was thinking. I suppose on the plus side, with everything pointing to a catastrophic failure, at least death would have been (hopefully) almost instantaneous .
