Bulls explode after power lines collapse
Friday, May 29, 2009

Seven bulls exploded and caught fire after power lines fell on a dairy farm in New Zealand.
The incident happened north of Auckland at Wilks Road farm.

Dave Taylor, who leases the farm, said he got a phone call from his father who was driving along the motorway, telling him his cows were exploding.

'I found seven dead and on fire in the paddock,' he said.

Three bulls were electrocuted after the power lines fell and four were killed when they walked into the live area.

A hedgehog was also killed.

Wasn't there a mini tabletop strategy game called Exploding Cow?

I think you were blowing up Mad Cow Disease cows from England by sending them to trip old WWII land mines along the Alsace-Lorraine, though.

Many people, like these cows, do not realize that even if the power line is on the ground that the voltage on the surface of the ground is still very dangerous. The surface voltage will drop off in concentric rings around the point of contact, so that over the span of three feet there may be a voltage difference of 3000 volts (assuming that primary line, 13,000volts, is down), and those 3000 volts are more than enough to kill you... or a bull apparently.

But how much voltage do we need to make things explode?

Keep to whats important! Smiley: eek

As amusing as this story seems I'm sure its quite horrific to see the poor beasts laying dead on the ground and it cannot be a pleasant way to die Smiley: frown

I wonder if they can slaughter the animals and if so, do they now come as pre cooked? Smiley: dubious

Also.. this reminds me of the first couple scenes in mars attacks, where the flaming stampede of cows go running by.

Why does the headline say that the cows were killed by a power line yet the photo says they were killed by lightning?

Huh?

There must be livestock insurance that would cover financial loss due to splodin' cows.

Better question: If they were supposed to have exploded then why are they... totally not exploded in the picture?

The caption says "These cows were killed by lightning." Leads me to think it's simply a file photo and they don't have one of the actual incident.
