I gotta get this off my chest...

For those who have ever traveled by air with a pet, maybe you will understand more.

I am traveling from Mexico City to Toronto with my cat. I check out mexicana.com to see their restrictions. This is my third airline i will travel with my pet, same old stuff; kennel restrictions, etc.

So what you normally do at this point is call and register that you are bringing your pet (only a certain amount of pets are allowed on the flight). Now here is where it starts to get good....

Under "Service Animal Transportation Details" is says on flights longer than 3 hours you can not bring your pet on board unless it is a service animal. Now why the hell would they make this very important statement under service animals?!?!! I don't want to put my pet underneath for safety sake. You would think it would make sense to make this statement under the normal pet restrictions!!!!

So after waiting 1 hour trying to talk to a supervisor, the supervisor is still unavailable. "You can email to make a formal complaint", my flight is in two weeks, and it will take them how long to get back to me?!?! So then I get "Try this number sir" , 10 numbers later, and 1 wrong number given, still no supervisor.

Fine, I give in. It's not a long flight, 4.5 hours, I will buy a hard carrier and have my pet go under with the luggage. Still going to send an angry email.

**Warning, gets better here***

So I call the original number... Say I will want to register my pet to be on the flight in the luggage area. "let me connect you to someone else" . Ok..... Now I did skim through all the restrictions, but this

'Transportation is subject to space and same-day authorization. Pets will be registered on a first-come/first-served basis.'

means that you cannot register that you are bringing a pet ahead of time. The ONLY thing you can do is bring your pet on the same day you plan to leave and hope that there is room for it. If not, well you are **** out of luck.

YES THAT'S RIGHT, YOU WILL HAVE TO LEAVE YOUR PET AT THE AIRPORT ALONE. Or i guess not take your flight and waste hundreds of dollars.

I can understand that pets should be allows on a first come first serve basis. But for f's sake, let me register my pet ahead of time so I don't have to risk leaving it behind! It's not a toy, its not a set of knives, it's not fruit, its a living thing! How can I risk leaving it behind to god knows what they will do with it?

UPDATE: As I wrote this I still could not talk to a supervisor, they are too busy. Seems to me that there just isn't enough supervisors or they really don't give a ****.

FFXI related: Is this better customer support than from SE?

And sorry if this was not 'The Asylum' appropriate. I have never posted a new thread here. So nuke it, delete it, move it, do whatever. It was just nice to get this out. Saved breaking some household items.

I've never been on a plane that allowed people to carry their pets in the cabin. Always had to be stored away in a pet carrier.

Northwest Airlines, Westjet, Mexicana, Alaska Airlines, allow pets in the Cabin to name a few.

Forewarning for Pensive: do not despoiler this next bit of text.

Nadaa, your cat would be happier staying in one space and changing owners. Because, you know, cats don't actually form bonds with their owners. It's pretty safe to say your cat only cares about your ability to open a tin. Sorry to say, man.

I've been on plenty of flights with purse dogs and cats in those soft pet carriers.

also, I found this..

Quote:
Mexicana Airlines
Routes: Mexico North & South America

Pets Are Allowed In The Cabin And As Cargo On Most Flights.

Mexicana has a rather unusual policy. The Captain of the aircraft determines whether or not the pet will be able to travel on his aircraft

From personal experience asking the Captain's permission is all that is required

Transportation fee is $90.00 each direction
The pet must be in an airline approved Soft-sided carrier that will fit under the aircraft seat
Maximum weight of pet in the carrier is 22 lbs.
You must present an International Veterinary Health Certificate issued within 10 days of travel
Rabies Certificate is also required

NOTE: Effective September 13, 2008, by Civil Aviation Law directive, it is prohibited that any passenger with a flight originating in Mexico City International Airport transport a pet traveling in the passenger cabin in all domestic flights. All pets can only be transported under AVIH conditions and requirements. This prohibition is subject to the national security filters and does not apply to passengers with international destinations, in transit or connecting through the Mexico City International Airport or traveling with pets for medical or service reasons.

Under the Animal Welfare Act, APHIS regulates the air transport of dogs and cats. The AWA provides regulatory guidelines to assure humane travel standards for pets. Travelers need to know the following criteria before traveling with an airline:

* Dogs and cats must be at least 8 weeks old and weaned.
* Kennels must meet minimum standards for size, strength, sanitation and ventilation.
* Kennels must be enclosed and allow room for the animal to stand, sit, breathe and rest comfortably.
* Kennels must have a solid, leak-proof floor covered with litter or absorbent lining.
* Kennels must have ventilated openings making up 14 percent of total wall space.
* Kennels must have grips or handles for lifting to facilitate handling by cargo workers.
* Each species must have its own kennel with the exception of compatible personal pets of similar size. Maximum numbers include two puppies or kittens less than 6 months old.
* Airlines require attached instructions to the kennel for feeding, watering and administering medication for any animal when traveling time is over 24 hours.
* Airlines and state health officials generally require health certificates for all animals transported by air. A licensed veterinarian who examined the animal within 10 days of transport must issue health certificates.
* Pet cats and dogs are subject to inspection at points of entry for evidence of infectious diseases transmittable to humans. Dogs must have an unexpired certificate showing vaccination against rabies at least 30 days prior to entry into the United States. Pet cats do not require a rabies vaccination.
* The owner must travel on same flight with the pet and must provide a leakproof kennel for air transportation. The maximum size for a kennel to fit under the seat is (30cm width, 40cm lenght and 18cm hight), for flights F-100 the dimentions will be (30cm width, 50cm lenght and 37cm hight)Any kennel larger than this will have to be checked-in to be placed in the baggage cabin and must have a maximum size (65 cm. width by 1.10m length and 75cm hight.). Maximum weight for (PETCs & kennel ) will be 10Kg (22lb) and for (AVIH + kennel) 45kg (100lb)
* A 4½-hour check-in time is required for international flights.
* The cost of transportation for each pet is $90.00 USD each way (plus taxes) on all international flights and $45.00 USD each way (plus taxes) on flights within México. Transportation is subject to space and same-day authorization. Pets will be registered on a first-come/first-served basis.
* If you purchase your tickets online, please contact our Internet Support Desk to register your pet. You can reach us at 1 (800) 531-3585, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m., CST, from the United States and Canada. If you are located in Mexico, please dial 01 (800) 509-8960, or (55) 5448-1050 from Mexico City.

Note: There is a maximum of 1 AVIH pets per person permitted on flights (A-318,A-319, A-320, B767 and F-100 ). All pets must be transported according to the mentioned regulations.

As much as I love my cat, I would not fly with him if I did not need to.

The best of luck with getting your kitty to come.

I have been teaching around the world so the cat has to come too. He is actually great on flights. Doesn't make a sound. But cars.. he goes crazy in cars.

Now its not like I fly a lot with him. It's like 1 flight every couple years.

That is kind of adorable, like something out of a novel. The Teacher's Pet, by Nadaa Notalastname.

You can thank me by forwarding some royalties.
