I would guess that the report button is there to take care of stuff that needs to die immediately--not so much annoying posts, which the karma system handles nicely, but stuff like game currency sellers, people spamming links to their keylogging websites, that sort of thing. Kind of how images can be reported as well--it helps bring the stuff that needs immediate attention to the admins' attention. I don't know whether or not the post immediately disappears the way images, do, though.

If it has been implemented properly, the report button is a good idea. Most of the time the posts that were in need a admin attention, such as gold selling, phishing, or lewdness, were reported of in the site feed back forum. There they would be nuked. Karma was far too slow in taking care of the issue, and almost never came into effect before the problem was effectively dealt with.

If the site's staff become content with the report button then we could potentially do away with karma. It would no longer be ineffective and superfluous, only superfluous.

Damn straight.

Interestingly, the report button is there on admin posts as well.
