I just found this article from the NYTimes.

Quote:
Ten minutes into arrant mayhem in this town near the Mexican border, and the gunman, a disgruntled Iraq war veteran, has already taken out two people, one slumped in his desk, the other covered in blood on the floor.

The responding officers — eight teenage boys and girls, the youngest 14 — face tripwire, a thin cloud of poisonous gas and loud shots — BAM! BAM! — fired from behind a flimsy wall. They move quickly, pellet guns drawn and masks affixed.

“United States Border Patrol! Put your hands up!” screams one in a voice cracking with adolescent determination as the suspect is subdued.

Quote:

I like shooting them,” Cathy said. “I like the sound they make. It gets me excited.”

Quote:
Just as there are soccer moms, there are Explorers dads, who attend the competitions, man the hamburger grill and donate their land for the simulated marijuana field raids.

Holy fckin cow!! WTF are kids in the States being taught?? I thought it was all about square knots, sailing and camp-craft!

Whatever happened to compassionate nurturing education for children?

To play "Cops and Robbers", apparently? I don't find this particularity offensive. Stupid, sure, but not outrageous or dangerous or anything kids wouldn't do with less organization and technology on their own.

To make a long story short, I don't take any responsibility for anything I post here. It's not news, it's not truth, it's not serious. It's parody. It's satire. It's bitter. It's angsty. Your mother's a *****. You like to jack off dogs. That's right, you heard me. You like to grab that dog by the bone and rub it like a ski pole. Your dad? Gay. Your priest? Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

It used to be Guns and Indians.

Then it was Cops and Robbers.

Now it's Boarder Patrol and Illegal Immigrants.

In elementary school, we liked to play an Aliens vs. Humans version.

More like "Stormtroopers and Illegal Immigrants/Muzzies/Pot-Smokers".

I guess tho that with the downturn in the economy an the simultaneous drop off in the job-market, then the one place where employment will always be availiable is with the government and its ever expanding 'security' apparatus.

You just need to teach the kids who the 'enemy' is from an early age.

Get 'em young and stupid, when it all taps into a whole bunch of primitive wiring. I swear I've read/seen at least SF works with this sort of theme in it somewhere.

I like play, and I like kiddie blinkies being taught survival skills. Including self-defence and responsible use of weaponry. I don't think I like governments or institutions or gung-ho parents defining "baddies" to children of a certain age (who are known to only see in black and white, instead of adult shades of grey).

What worries me most is what will happen when the kids encounter a dangerous situation in real life--somehow I don't think it would all be fun and games, and they're certainly not being taught to stay out of trouble.

Also,

Quote:
In a competition in Arizona that he did not oversee, Deputy Lowenthal said, one role-player wore traditional Arab dress. “If we’re looking at 9/11 and what a Middle Eastern terrorist would be like,” he said, “then maybe your role-player would look like that. I don’t know, would you call that politically incorrect?”

So much fail. Smiley: oyvey

Personally, I'd not provide thought-out scenario's at all for children's play. Hinders the imagination.

Give the kids lazer markers, paint-ball markers, whatever, provide some simple rules, instruction and oversight let them decide how they want to create conflict.
