What would happen to my virtual world after I'm gone?Follow

This was brought up recently after losing one of our own. This article was on CNN.com today and is about what happens to your online life if you were to pass away.

I have to agree with one of the men interviewed when he talks about not wanting to give one website all his online information. He says that it’s "one stop shopping" for internet hackers and I agree with this, although I do think theory is a good one.

After the death of one of the posters here it made me talk to my husband about what to do if something would happen to me. I would want my FFXI friends to know. Face book and MySpace. From there I don't really have any websites that I own so that wouldn't be an issue. I guess I would want him to tell you guys as well. Although I'm new to the Asylum and OOT I have made some friends and would wonder where they are if they were to stop posting.

I apologize ahead of time if this is beating a dead hoarse but I thought the article was interesting since It did relate to my own virtual world.

If anything happened to me, I expect Flea would tell people via Facebook and it would find its way here.

If something happened to both of us, you'd have to guess based on radio silence.

I don't imagine there are too many virtual people who would notice my absence much. My husband might go into the OOT and tell people, but I very much doubt it would cross his mind. Maybe if I leave auto-renew on my premium he'd notice the charge and contact Zam.com about it, but I doubt it. He'd probably just pay it.

Mr. Tare would never think to let you guys know if I kicked it. I leave that task to DSD.

Yay!

I think I would end up fading away. I'm sure my FFXI friends would begin to wonder, as I wouldn't be on msn/skype or FFXI (And I'd be accused of stealing LS money and server hopping too I guess.).

But I doubt I'd be too missed online, maybe the odd person thinking back, but not many.

Kinda sad when you think about it Smiley: frown

Just tell him if anything happens to you to post it on YOUR FB page too. Then I'll know and can pass on the info (along with Jophs demise if Flea posts, and tares demise.... you know I should really start thinking of messenger fees here Smiley: dubious )

There was a Law and Order I saw recently where some people ran a site that would send out emails and letters to people left behind after the Rapture. So after the Rapture, the site would send it all out. Only they fuct up and it all went out early, hahaha! I thought the concept behind that episode was pretty hilarious.

For me, I think Mr. Pikko would post on my blog and tell people in IRC, since I'm employed here. I doubt he'd give much detail or reply after that though.

So wait... did they have a list of people who would be left behind? Or did they just have a list of EVERYONE and just assume if they sent out the messages, and you received them, then you were obviously left behind?

It was a site that people who intended to be taken in the Rapture paid fees to and the site would send out emails and stuff to all their friends and family that didn't get saved.

I would suspect Hannah's circle of conspirators and Mr. Tare would never make it to the witness stand.

My son would scoop on any paid up game accounts - I think he knows, or has a good idea of all my passwords. There are one or two gaming acquaintances that my hubby may or may not contact.

As to my Alla persona, it would fade away unnoticed. And good riddance!!!!

We found out one of our linkshell members in FFXI died a few months after the fact, because all his friends had either already quit or quit when he died because they were too depressed to play any more. It was sudden and unexpected.

I still have a pair of Blessed Trousers signed by him Smiley: cry

A co-worker died a couple months back. It was cancer, but it was sudden and unexpected. I found a sticky-note in my drawer the other day hand-written by her. The message was inconsequential. I kept it - I'm not sure why, nor what I'll actually do with it.

Jack Chalker's widow had name labels to look like Con Badges, printed out for his Funeral and I stuck mine on a drawer on my head board. It will most likely still be there when I die.

I've yet to read one of his books, but will always remember him for the stories he would tell of other conventions and authors in the Con suite and at BSFS meetings.

As for me, I'm sure someone would post here to let people know I've passed away. Jonwin and at least one of my daughters knows my password, so if I don't make it to 10,000 posts before then, it will be their job to post for me.
