...and I'm moving to Massachusetts, I guess I'll just have to start working on the DOMA.

NPR Article on the "Gay Tax"

Excerpt:
Quote:
The good news is that Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders, which successfully fought for marriage equality in Massachusetts, filed a suit challenging DOMA in Boston's Federal District Court this past March. Plaintiffs include the aforementioned couples and six others, among them Dean Hara, the widower of U.S. Rep. Gerry Studds. The bad news is that we're looking at a long, slow march to the U.S. Supreme Court. And our current administration and Congress are full of officials who are quick to pay lip service to the concept of equality but won't lift a finger to change the law.

That's a shame, because DOMA is aging badly: Five states have legalized same-sex marriage since 1996 and still more are on the verge of doing so, while public support for marriage equality is growing. The government's insistence on charging same-sex married couples exorbitant fees for basic rights makes it look less like a defender of marriage than a loan shark.

:)

This is the second time to day that you've had some fantasy about me leaving Smash for some reason. Something you want to tell me Deb?

No, even if I leave Smash, I'm not babysitting.

That article made me realize it sure does sound weird when a lesbian refers to her marital partner as her wife. Same for a man and his husband.

Funny how just yesterday a whole bunch of folks were insisting that there were no measurable tax benefits granted by marriage. Just gotta love the timing...

Um...

Isn't this thread about an unequal tax being placed on homosexual marriages? How's that a benefit? Or am I missing something?

In relation to raising children, remember? The reason you stated for the benefits? So, to sum up, you're making the case that retirement benefits when a 70 year old dies help raise children 40 years previously.

Granted, about par for your attempts to butcher economics, but not terribly compelling.

Also, one of my closest (the one I talk to the most) friends from high school was dismissed from the military b/c of the whole don't ask, don't tell, esprit de corps bullsh*t. Not because of her performance or her relationships with her colleagues. She was investigated, sent to a psychiatric facility (who wanted to cure her of the gay) and kicked out.

AWESOME! We apparently have way too many people in the military. We can be picky and kick out qualified people.

Besides DOMA, Don't ask, don't tell needs to be on the fucking table. Smiley: mad

We've long established that you greatly fear gay people. Why remains a mystery. I don't find it any way odd, not because of my political leanings, but just from a lexicography point of view. Why would they call their spouse anything else?

Highly unlikely, unless you're 20 years older that I'd assumed.

Actually, that's not at all what we were claiming. We were claiming that there were no measurable tax INCREASES to us het-folk in allowing gay people to marry. Entirely different claim.

Absolutely. The article only proves my point, that just because the surface issue relates to money, the CORE issue is equality. Always has been, always will be, for as long as this absolutely stupid-*** method of discrimination exists. It's still about equality. You have yet to address the question I put to you yesterday, so I'll ask it again:

Can you not see how telling a gay couple "okay, you can call yourselves 'married' but if one of you dies prematurely, the remaining spouse gets fuck-all, too bad" is STILL sending the message that SOME unions are legitimate and others are not?

Can you not see how making a LEGALLY MARRIED couple pay a different rate than is paid by other LEGALLY MARRIED couples is an issue of equality?

Oh, I dunno, maybe because the words husband and wife have a long held a connotation of gender? When's the last time you heard someone refer to their husband and had to consider whether the husband was female or male? Right. So when a female refers to her "wife", I immediately wonder who shares what roles in their relationship. Do they both refer to their spouse as their "wife"? Which wife typically does the dishes? Which wife typically does the handy work? Same for guys. It has nothing to do with sexual preference at all. Your repeated insistence that I some how "fear" homosexuals is, quite frankly, stupid.

At military and VA hospitals and psychiatric institutions, you're lucky if your care is only 20 years out of date.

I would assume so... they probably aren't going to designate one person as the husband in accordance with some ridiculous and archaic connotation that I really don't know why you are hung up on.

Yeah, moron, of the person being referred to. I would find it odd for a gay man to refer to his spouse as "my wife".

When's the last time you heard someone refer to their husband and had to consider whether the husband was female or male?

Never, idiot, as once again, the term is tied to the gender of the person being referenced.

Right. So when a female refers to her "wife", I immediately wonder who shares what roles in their relationship. Do they both refer to their spouse as their "wife"?

I see.

Which wife typically does the dishes? Which wife typically does the handy work? Same for guys.

Holy fucking sh*t, is it 1958 already? This is the source of your confusion?? Which partner does the housework?? I'll take this as code as it making you uneasy which one more frequently penetrates the other.

I agree, it is stupid. You should grow the fuck up and get over it.

Haha, I had assumed Smash was responding to a gbaji post there. Then I scrolled up.

How do you decide which spouse does the dishes in a hetero marriage, Stubs? Smiley: dubious

Isn't it normally the one with more time, or who's turn it is?

My grandpa did the dishes in his marriage. He believed that a woman was his partner and not his servant. They shared all the tasks in the household.

He was more awesome than Stubs is apparently, even back in the 40s when they got married.

Mr. Ambrya and I have a deal. He hates to cook, I hate to clean. So I unload the dishwasher and cook the meal, he cleans up the mess and loads the dishwasher.

I got the better end of that bargain, but he has no complaints.

I dunno how I and the future Mrs. Ash would arrange things, but I certainly wouldn't expect anything specific.

Hello, I'm Smasharoo. I see we haven't met.

Am I really that deserving of a response?

Probably not. I'd agree that you should count yourself lucky that I responded to one of your posts. As for the tone, it's not you personally. I could give a fuck if you die tomorrow in a chainsaw rape. It's the idea that this quiet xenophobia you share with much of the slack jawed population keeps normal people who love each other from getting on with their fucking lives because you get all confused and anxious at the thought of two married men dividing up chores and would prefer not to have to think about it.
