Revenge of the Rabbits!Follow

Rabbits are infiltrating my perimeter, the garden. Any suggestions on how to deal with them besides waking up at 5am and taking my air rifle out there?

In my experience, the best way to keep rabbits out of your garden is to let them eat something they like more. My local lapine population is too busy rooting around in the delicious dandelions and wild clover to bother with my strange foreign plants species in the garden. I can't speak for Varrus but, locally, the people who have the worst bunnies-in-the-garden problems are those whose yards consist of pure bluegrass turf and a garden.

Nioba,

So probably not a good idea to spray on my cabbage?

Jophed,

You're telling me. This morning I saw 4 of them out there. Of course by the time I got the air rifle ready they were gone. I can so relate to Elmer Fudd.

There's "Rabbit chasers" made of tobacco dust & dried blood which are safe for garden use. They're not super effective and need to be reapplied regularly but at least they won't poison your cabbage.

reinforce your perimeter.

Fencing that goes into the ground 4 to 6 inches is really the only way to keep them out once they've found the veggies.

You can often head them off by putting up hostile smelling and looking stuff and keeping them away from the area all together. But once they've found the goodies, they'll soil their mittens to get at it.

I've heard they don't like cayenne pepper.

Elinda,

My gardens a bit to big to put up fencing. I do like the idea of planting cayenne peppers along the outside of it.

Put your lauded dogs outside and make them work. I thought that's what we domesticated the things for.

Considering he never killed a single rabbit in 60+ years you'd be better off hiring Bugs Bunny to defend your food.

Jophed,

Can't simply let a 225lb great dane have free run of the mill now can I?

I am beginning to leave my sheppard out at nights. But what inevitably happens is he sticks his nose up a skunks as* and I have to spend the next week washing him twice a day.

I think it's proof of the "Try, Try again" method. If you get banned the first 40 times, the 41st you'll finally make it.

Everyone loves to have him to kick around. Might as well have his posts be readable by all. Mission accomplished, looks like someone hates me though.

I'm fine with not banning him every other month, but this is just dumb.
