I really doubt they were actually fat. If they had that much extra calories available, their life expectancy would have been longer. Also, I believe there would be evidence of high weight in the fossil record - and it's an obvious thing to look for since all the Venus are large (as I recall from art history class all those years ago...side note: the men were portrayed as slender and often with animal characteristics (things that would help them to hunt)).

It's my recollection from art history class that few (none?) of the human figures had detailed faces. I recall one figure with a detailed head of hair, but the face was not articulated (so that was a case with an obvious head, but no detailed face...I think the others I saw did have heads, but I could be wrong on that it was long ago). It seemed that most of the effort (that which survived to modern times, anyhow) was of animals, not people. You don't get a lot of human depictions until agriculture (and large societies).
