It's a brilliant move. He's quelling the fears of people like varrus, but at the same time, you know they're going to be public eventually. Obama said he wouldn't block the release if the courts now decide they need to be published.

Disturbing.

Not because it's pandering or purely a political decision, but because I'm going to be forced to travel different avenues to quench my thirst for images of brown people being debased.

Really it's a no-win. Release the pictures and have one group enraged at the images depicted, or withhold the pictures and sow further seeds of suspicion. Personally I'd be more apt to just release them with an ample amount of humility and heartfelt apology, but that's because as a fan of man I optimistically believe people appreciate transparency and remorse. Even brown people.

Honestly though, they must be fairly damning. The reasons they're being withheld are ostensibly to avoid "inflaming our enemies," but I have a feeling a fair few 'Mercans will be pissed at what they see, too.

I have to agree. It's better to bring them out, let the world know that he considers them extremely ****** up, make nice and say he's sorry, and get it out of the closet.

And rightfully so, but I can see effective propaganda spawned by their withholding, as well. Something along the lines of, "The Americans do not want you to know the worst of their crimes."

Frankly it's all about the method with which the pictures are presented, in my opinion. Done well, they can be seen as a new, welcoming transparency.

The decision to renege feels like pandering to our most paranoid citizens moreso than doing what's best in the ongoing contest for hearts and minds.

Either way it doesn't affect me on a personal level, but I do find it abhorrent that the ACLU actually *wants* these photographs for some reason. Most of the people that were responsible for committing the acts depicted in the last round of photos have already been court martialed and are serving prison sentences. There's only two things that releasing these images will accomplish.

1) Add further fuel the ACLU's campaign to make everyone realize that everyone sucks, but leaving open avenues of legal recourse incase someone tries to tell you that you suck more than they do.

and

2) Image macro fodder for *chan's /b/ board.

There's also a chance that once the images make their way into the hands of Jihadist that we'll see a few more roadside IIDs and attacks against Americans and American interests.

Feh. People make my head hurt.

I'm thinking on a website, aggressively marketed via spam email, which requires a paid age verification service account for access.

In my mind, the people who are at present so bitterly opposed to the US as to employ violence are for the most part already lost.

The people who are on the brink or moving in that direction would be more likely dissuaded by genuine remorse and honesty than broken promises which are easily manipulated into corrosive suspicion.

I think Obama's decision is a political one more about the climate at home, and pandering to a demographic that for a myriad of reasons(shame, pride, fear, etc) desires the images be withheld.

I'd find it more disturbing if I thought it was truly significant in the grand scheme, but really it just strikes me as an easily tossed bone to pacify some of our more dull-brained citizens.

Its a completely insignificant, irrelevant, moot issue.

The pictures in question have already been made available to the public by an Australian newspaper in 2006.

Clicked on the link, then realized I might find some stuff I don't want to see on my work PC. I think they should be released right now... pretty much exactly as BT said.
