Poor analogy.

The OoT is more the conjoined twin whom upon post-surgical evaluation is found to be less intelligent, attractive and charming so it's naturally relegated to the crawlspace where it languishes in its own gurgling incoherence.

That said, I don't see anything in my description precluding an amicable relationship.

To continue the Thanksgiving Dinner analogy, it's like the Asylum is the adult table and the OOT is the kids table. I know that, personally, I wouldn't make some of the same, silly jokes in the Asylum that I make in the OOT. I am more compelled to act like a grown up when I'm in here.

The problem, I guess, is that sometimes the innocent joke threads turn into issues, and a new poster's feelings get hurt. If that thread is moved to the Asylum, that doesn't really solve the problem. An admin still gets a PM ******** about some insult or another, no matter how tame it is.

Lord, I'm babbling a lot today...

Bel you're right about the OOT as it is now. My point was more that the Asylum was originally created to be a place for people who can insult and take insults wheras the OOT was for the safer play. I'm not necessarily stating that the rule of children bashing should be exempt solely for the Asylum, thats something you guys over at OOT can debate. My point was just that there needs to be a place where those of us who are comfortable with the ability to insult each other and our spawn can have a go at it without repercussions.

not to mention what one poster may take as harassment towards their demon spawn, another my laugh their *** off. So what exactly would equal to the new amendment? And is that really fair to those of us who actually are able to take as well as they give, to have that freedom of joking with people they know taken away because one idiot mother cant handle the fact her precious fucking snowflake may have been ridiculed?

well, people just don't post the juicy tidbits in your forum >.> seriously, if someone came in here and posted about how they had hit their child I think similar reactions would result:

1. ridicule
2. more ridicule

And you are completely right, a rule like that isn't fair to the Asylum. People come here knowing that EVERYTHING is fair. (miscarriages, austic children, bad parents, divorces, current relationships etc)

I kind of wish there was a premium user only, off topic forum - those of us who participate pay to abuse and be abused ;)

Here's my rambling, general opinion on the subject, mostly in regards to the Asylum:

Barely over a week ago, people were muted and spanked and told to take their act to the Asylum. One stupid flame thread later, a couple of people (who shouldn't be here anyway, by basic definition) got their feelings hurt and complained. Now, the Asylum is being smacked with the same kiddie-pool set of rules as the other forums. (at least, this is how the situation appears)

I understand hurt feelings are a big cause of stress to the administrators, because usually these people are already charged up, and a big part of the job is to keep the peace. I also understand that =10 and etc are not the place to discuss rape or the actions one might take towards their children. But, if you're gonna have the Asylum, you should probably just let it be. Put an 18+ disclaimer at the top, or something. People have been warned that if they can't take it, they shouldn't post here, and then those that do get their butthurt complaints validated by nuked posts. And now here we are. I hate to say it, but a lot of this was caused by emotionally charged decisions made by admins, which really shouldn't be the way a forum is handled. If the Asylum is going to be no holds barred, which is supposedly has been since probably its inception, the admins need to accept that and not pander to the few who already have been told to just keep their posting in the OOT. The fact is, I'm not gonna just start making Bunny flame threads in the Asylum just because I can. But if she ventures here and posts something, I was under the impression that I had the right to voice my opinion in her general direction.

Is it really that hard for people to just stay out of a forum? There are a ton of forums on this site. I only visit 4-5 regularly, maybe. If I want to attention ***** somewhere peacefully, I could go to forum=10 and post pictures of my moogle tattoo. You, as administrators, can delegate a place for everything, and make sure everything in its place. The fact is, this is a video game website. On the off topic forums, lifestyles are going to clash no matter what. If someone wants to post about their children and be fully accepted, there are plenty of forums all over the internet in place for just that reason. If the mass majority voices that they don't want to hear your **** here, and you still post it, you should accept the consequences. I have a feeling that there are a lot of people here who don't understand the basic concept of cause and effect.

I started lurking in the Asylum around the time of the skeeter-flea drama. That being said, what kept me coming back was the diversity of the forum and the little personalities that sprung up all over the place, each fulfilling a certain niche. The trolls certainly would make things more interesting, Dracoid in particular. They tend to make posters show their true colors. Can the Asylum go back to the days of when the regular posters flamed each other all the time? No. Stop dwelling on it. Every once in a while someone will try, but it's all long gone at this point and is the equivalent of a bunch of 80 year olds in a retirement home hitting one another on the knee with their canes. New posters would have to come in and incite it, which would require quality trolls.

The only posters who can get a reaction like that anymore are Smash, BT and on occasions Totem. But I'm still waiting for Samira to do something @#%^ing crazy enough to make the entire forum blush.

And amendment 5 seems like it'd be an awfully easy way for admins to go nuke happy and flex their little e-peens without forum ridicule.

Oh and, what Joph said.

As a fellow long-time lurker, I second this.

Really, though, it seems like all of the old-time posters here agree that Amendment 5 is an absolutely terrible idea, and Amendment 1, at the very least, shouldn't apply to the Asylum. This forum was created specifically for these older posters and while there aren't as many of them around as there were before, let's face it: if Jophiel, Samira, Nexa, Red, Smash, Tare, Thumb, DSD and Totem (I'm sure I'm forgetting a few names) all left, there would really be no point to this forum at all. They seem to be perfectly capable of keeping this place self-regulated on their own and they're all able to handle even the most perverse imagery from the darkest corners of BT's mind, so why change things?

Holy ****. One of the worst trains I was ever part of in EQ started with the words, "What do you bet me that I can hit that orc from here?"

Also, regarding this:

If I were an admin and someone came crying to me about something some mean person said about me in a thread I started specifically to stir **** in the Asylum, my default response would be to block the complaining party's access to the Asylum.

Eh, it's just because the admins were thinking of merging the OoT and Asylum a few weeks ago, and members of both forums have some pretty strong opinions about keeping them separate.

I think the biggest confusion to me over the child harassment thing is two-fold:

One: It's fairly damn specific. Apparently, we can tell a fellow poster they are an ***-licking **** who lives with their parents, should highly consider having their reproductive organs removed to prevent spread of their genes, and that they are a complete and utter waste of space while within the confines of the Asylum...

.. And yet if I say "Hey [insertposterhere], you're kid's a fatty fat," I can get disciplined on it. So, we can harass the hell out of a poster, tell them horrible things, and not be moderated (with you all saying the Asylum is for that sort of thing, and don't post there if you are unprepared for that), but drag their kid into it and **** gets serious?

Second: Focusing it on the Asylum, again, makes no sense since this is no holds barred. That basically means if there are no holds barred, there are no rules of conduct, anything goes. You even warn that it's not for the feint of heart.

So, why exactly are you placing restrictions, specific restrictions, on posters?

The reply from an admin point should be standard: They're posting about your kids? Don't post in that forum. If they takes it someplace else, we'll deal with them. After that, the problem becomes self-moderating. Offended user posts elsewhere, and so long as the offending user doesn't go off the reservation, so to speak, that's that.

I'm not saying you don't have a right to change the site, but let's not kid ourselves: Making laws for a lawless forum is a step towards moderating its contents more heavily. So, either alter the Asylum in such a manner that flaming is not permitted, or leave the situation as is and heavily clarify that entering the Asylum is done at one's own risk.
