Um... No. They wouldn't. It would make it easier for them to deliberately misconstrue whatever I wrote. Or did you just miss the concise statement I made that "While the whole "open up a new treasury" bit is hyperbole, the substance of your friends statement appears to be correct." was responded to with "OMG! You think we're going to have to open up a new treasury. U R dumb!!!"?

Was that one sentence not concise enough? Really?

Apparently, some people *do* need to have things read to them slowly and repeatedly...
It was a concise statement in the middle of a paragraph, surrounded by 12 other paragraphs. So way to completely reinforce my point? This is exactly what I was saying. I can copy and paste some random stuff before and after this if it'll make it easier for you.

Not a thought related to the OP post but I heard a rather creative remark yesterday, here goes.

Everyone said we'd have a black president when pigs fly, 4 months into his administration we have Swine Flu.

Ok corny but it made me laugh.

I didn't think I could actually think less of you. Then, you have to go ahead and use "creative" to describe that drivel.

Oh no, I'm not laughing at your joke.

I'm laughing at the thought of your children being raped.

On the flip side I purposely keep my posts succinct because I know the uneducated masses have a difficult time processing information that doesn't come in sound bytes.

It's not so much sound bytes, as it is I have very limited internet time at my office, and something that is 6 paragraphs long is going to be skimmed in the interest of saving time.

Had I written just the one sentence and nothing else, do you think the resulting choice of cut and paste and response would have been different? Cause that seems unlikely...

You know I went and read a Gbaji post from the Old UBB forums when the archive was linked a while ago. Nothings changed.

Someone is always going to twist your words. The reason for this is because they're trolling you. Just troll them back. I find agreeing with them and extrapolating to a completely absurd outcome works the best. People you actually care about discussing something with will likely tend to at least try to take your words at face value. Or just don't worry about it, reply with "way to completely miss the point". At that point instead of completely reiterating your point just hit post message.

btw, ellipses not needed there.

If I had the slightest belief that this was the case, I wouldn't have a problem with it. I've engaged in "silly" threads as often as the next guy on this site. I don't have a problem with that.

When my words are twisted around by people who very clearly feel strongly about the issue they're talking about (ie: not just trolling), it's a very different thing. If it were one or two people doing this, it wouldn't be a big deal. And if the word twisting was just occurring on an internet forum, it would also not be such a big deal. But I've seen the exact same twisted logic used by political commentators on the left, in complete seriousness. There are pretty much zero arguments I run into on this site which aren't parrots of arguments you can hear uttered by folks like Olbermann, Garafolo, Colmes, and numerous guests on various news shows, and repeated over and over by more folks on blogs, comedy shows, and from awards podiums.

If it was trolling, they wouldn't actually believe what they're saying. But they do. That's kind of the scary bit I suppose. It looks like our political debate has largely been replaced with clever one-liners, ridiculous assumptive phrases, bumper-stickers, and warped logic. Sure. I could just ignore it, but if no one stands up and says "No. That's not correct", when he hears someone repeating the latest liberal lie-de-jour, then everyone hearing these things will just assume they must be true. Cause, if everyone's saying it, it must be true, right?

Sorry. You can bash me for posting my opinions, but I'm not going to sit quietly by while I see so many people repeating what I believe to be blatant falsehoods about the politics of the world we live in.

When my words are twisted around

This never occurs. You're simply wrong, then lie about what your intent was. It's painfully transparent. I accept that you lie to yourself about this and I'm sure you believe it's the case, but for what you argue to be true, you'd have to be the poorest communicator ever to walk the planet.

This just in Obama set to raise taxes on everyone who owns an auto 1300$ annually.

Quote:
While the new fuel and emission standards for cars and trucks will save billions of barrels of oil, they are expected to cost consumers an extra $1,300 per vehicle by the time the plan is complete in 2016. Obama said the fuel cost savings would offset the higher price of vehicles in three years.

More taxes on behaviour. Don't suppose we could talk about drilling for our own oil could we?

I don't think you understand what a tax is. The $1300 is in vehicle costs, not money to the gummint.

And, backing up a few...

Ironically, whenever I've nailed Gbaji on parroting the AM radio talking point of the day, I get a defense of "We just both happened to think it was a great idea because it's right, not because I heard it on Limbaugh two hours ago."

Quaint.

Er, it's not a tax.

Jophed,

Actually I read it on Drudge. Didn't get a chance to listen to Rush or Boortz today.

Regardless do you think getting people to curb their driving habits is a good thing to a country that's looking to grow business?

If your car gets better mileage, why are you curbing your driving?

Jophed,

If your car gets better mileage great. But do you specifically penalize people whose vehicles don't?

What better way to stimulate the economy than to effectively force people to buy new cars, or have repairs done to their current ones?

You're going to have to provide a real-life example since this isn't what the article is talking about.
