More on Obama's no new taxes promiseFollow

#1 May 13 2009 at 1:21 PM Rating: Decent
Remember when Obama campaigned on the no new taxes on people earning under 250k?

Sure you do.

Wonder if that promise specifically excluded people who eat cherios and drink sodas.

Kael,

Ok...since saving Drudge to your favorites is such a task;

Quote:
If you make big bucks — or enjoy alcohol, cigarettes and Coke — the government might hit you up to pay for fixing the nation’s health care system.

On Tuesday, the Senate Finance Committee peeked into vending machines and liquor stores, company payrolls and health savings accounts, looking for a mix of tax increases and spending cuts as a way to pay for a health overhaul — which could cost more than $1.5 trillion over 10 years.

And yes I know this is the senate finance committee but you're dumber than I thought if you don't think Obama's meeting with top health care officials had anything to do with this.

SO.. sin taxes?

Not new or exciting.

What it isn't is an income tax increase.

Pensive,

A tax increase is a tax increase is a tax increase. Obama ran on the no new taxes for anyone making under 250k mantra. Don't come with this bs that he was only talking about about income taxes.

Just wait until Obama places a sin tax based on the number of miles a person drives a year. I mean sitting on your a** in a car most of the time can't be healthy right? Well lets tax mileage then. Amazing you people have the nerve to talk about freedom while supporting someone who's doing everything in his power to turn you into mush brained automotons.

Remember when Obama said he'd convert us to a greener nation whose vehicles ran on giggles and unicorn farts? I'm still waiting.

Edit: I recall a pubbie making quite the same promise a little over twenty years ago

I'll forward your idea for this to be an increase in the income tax rate instead along to my friends in OMB.

Which he was. And said as much.

While I have a problem with you reaching for straws on this, I agree with most of this. A tax on junk food, soda and the like is ********* a tax on Cigs and booze, I really don't have a problem with because each state Govn has been doing it for years. It is a sin tax. Only thing is, you get taxed twice for it. (Health care premiums and state and fed taxes on the items themselves)

Regardless, this really doesn't have anything to do with Obama.

Allegory,

You realize the govn just took over the auto industry right?

He's going to be the one to sign it into law. Then he'll be able to claim he "fixed" the healthcare system.

Then get re-elected along with 65 Democratic Senators. I can see why you'd want to avoid fixing healthcare.

So this means that people who live unhealthy lifestyles will have to pay for their own medical costs?

That doesn't in any way make it reasonably feasible to tax based on miles driven. The cost to tax based on miles driven would be greater than the revenue generated.

Don't you guys have something like insurance benefits if you drive less? Someone I know has a type of car insurance where they aren't allowed to drive more than 10,000km (6,000mi) a year if they don't want to pay much more.

As for actually taxing mileage, taxing gasoline is much easier. What Allegory said.

Not allowing high pollution types of cars in urban areas is an additional measure many places take nowadays.

Yeah, the per mile tax was discussed, but with the gas tax it's almost around the same anyway. Unless you drive an amazingly efficient car, the extra tax you pay from buying extra gas and driving long distances on highways about balances out with the lower tax that city-only people like me that do 20 miles a day max rack up.

I'm all for soda and Cheetos taxes. Might get me to kick the Coca-Cola habit once and for all.

Some insurance companies base your rate on how far your drive to work is, you can also get recreational rates and such.

Taxing gas is easier now but if we ever get significant numbers of electric vehicles on the road you will have a huge shortfall in tax revenue for roads (as if we aren't already collecting less than we need to maintain the roads). It also allows you to tax people based on qualitative usage as well.

Not to mention my scooters would probably be exempt and I wouldn't be taxed at all :P

Yeah, because reading an odometer at a yearly inspection is tremendously difficult. Far more complicated than testing the CO output of an exhaust system.

The thing is, climate aware governments want electric cars on the roads. Hell, the UK parliament wants to reward people with cash for buying electric cars. My government does reward the purchase of a more environment friendly car with €2,500 currently.

Might be I'm wrong, but here in Europe both petrol and electricity are about three to four times as expensive as they are in the US, if I'm not mistaken, and I always thought that was because we taxed 'em more. Thus, you might want to do the same.

I like how the OP assumes people who make over 250k/year won't be effected by this. The tax increase on their hot tub full of champagne and naked ladies is sure to sting.

It's a system trivially easy to cheat and requiring a significant increase in labor expense.

Our gas tax isn't for carbon control, it's road repair, bridge repair, and new construction. Without that money we will have woeful roads. Electric cars damage the road just as much as a regular ICE car. That's why we need a mileage tax, eventually.
