Police ticket Amish teen for having beer in his horse-drawn buggy

LEON, N.Y. (AP) — Police cracking down on rowdy Amish youths ticketed a teenager for having beer in his horse-drawn buggy when they pulled him over on a western New York road. They said the 17-year-old was charged with underage possession of alcohol after he was stopped by deputies late Monday night in the town of Leon, 40 miles south of Buffalo.

Detective Nathan Root said the teen admitted drinking beer, but passed a field sobriety test.

Root says another Amish man in the buggy, a 22-year-old, was charged with providing the beer. Both are scheduled to be arraigned June 22.

Patrols were stepped up after an Amish elder's property was vandalized when he confronted youths about their drinking and listening to radios.

Was there nothing better for these police to do then pull over horse-drawn buggies? Almost as bad as the cops in my town who, knowing there are people dealing crack two blocks down, proceed to pull me over and give me a ticket for, none other then, having a license plate light out.

I'm curious if he was driving that buggy wrecklessly and thats why he was pulled over. Then one would have to wonder... how do you drive a buggy wrecklessly. Was he crossing the yellow line? Passing on the right?

Wtf are you going on about?

You're pissed you got a ticket for a light out, so the police shouldn't pull over buggies?

The article obviously hints that these youths had been problematic before.

Who cares if they are Amish, who cares if it was a "horse drawn buggy". It's the police officers' jobs to take care of the problems.

"Was there nothing better for these police to do"...

No, because they were patrolling the area due to vandalism complaints.

Edit:
I hate the whole "OMG, there are worse people out there, stop wasting your time enforcing the minor laws on ME!!!!" *********

In Amish country? Probably not.

Not that I ever looked into it deeply but I was under the assumption that, like bicycles, if you take a horse-drawn buggy/carriage onto the asphalt, you're bound by the rules of the road just as if you were in a car.

You could start by not crashing it? Now, recklessly is a different matter.

For some reason, after watching Sex Drive, my mental image of an Amish fellow resembles Seth Green with a beard & hat in a horse-drawn buggy talking about lickin' some chicks ass and talkin' mopar about a GTO Judge.

It totally ruined the Amish image...

Edit: Wrong movie...duh

Are you suggesting I picked up a Randy Quaid look-alike Amish fellow after watching Kingpin 50 times?

Does you question/statement even make sense...?
