Unbelievable. Nature has found a way to put together two things that scare the crap out of me. I'm going to have nightmares.

Central Europe is lacking ants. They should just ship 'em here.

And yes, I know it's not that simple.

That's actually pretty cool. Although I'm always wary about introducing species that are not indigenous to an area. Like the dingos of Australia, or the introduction of Foxes to Alaskan islands. Who knows what the unintended consequences might be. I hope they do a nature show about that though, I'd like to watch it in HD.

The Cordycep genus of fungus attacks insects similarly. I found this video of the fungus to be rather haunting.

Yep, zombie invasion is starting. Always starts mundane, no one even realizes it. Some small, insignificant event. Figure in another three years and seven months we should all be knee deep in undead apocalypse.

There's also the parasite that causes a spider to weave a special web beneficial to the parasite.

Thank god there's no species of Cordyceps that specializes on humans, or we'd all be fucked.

No no no their heads explode off after a few days.

Actually I'm not big into introducing new species to non indigenous places, but man I wish I could get some of those flies and bring them here. If fireants are not native to the US, having an arch nemesis like that would help keep the population down. They really dont have anything to stop them spreading around here.

I hate fire ants. The smallest bite hurts like hell

I don't like the whole introduction of new species either, but hey, fire ants aren't originally found in the US anyway. And they suck. If they bite, they latch on, so even if you squish them or brush them off, their damn jaws are still stuck in you and need to get picked out. Not to mention they swarm like crazy if you get near their home. Need to watch your feet. I've learned to never wear sandals unless I have pavement underneath me down here in FL.

Not even pavement will help you out at times. I got bit by one whose colony was trying to build in between the cracks of a sidewalk in front of a store. Didnt even see them, but I was unfortunate to stand still for a couple minutes chatting with a friend, when I got bit. I can usually handle pain but holy hell I jumped when I got bit and it felt, well, like I got pricked by a white hot poker stick.

This reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode where the earwig chewing through the guys brain. These flies should be developed for use in human interrogation.

I wonder if PETA represents ants?

Pffft, like you are going to make it down here anyways.Smiley: rolleyes
Yes, we have fire ants, but for the most part their mounds are very noticable so you know where not to go. Think mini termite mounds. Plus, getting rid of them is pretty darn easy. We have the beginnings of a mound start to grow by our deck stairs. 3 gallons of boiling hot water later and they were deader than zombie fire ants. Smiley: grin

We also have black widows and copperheads.

For a moment, I thought it was really great that the Native Americans had found a way to water-proof moccasins.

I remember when moccasins were really popular, back in the early 80's. I never had a pair, but my mom did. She was styiln'.

No ma'am, cottonmouths. Mean, mean bastards - they don't only bite without provocation, they'll chase you.

Yeah we have those but I believe we had them up north too, although maybe not as prominent. And they're not nearly as common as the copperheads down here in this particular area.
We've got a great sign in our backyard I should get a picture of one day. We have a pond that flows into a stream and there is a fence around the stream. There is a sign on it by the community center that says Beware of Snakes. It always cracks up friends and family visiting.

I've yet to see any snakes down here, but have had my own run in with a Black widow. Something I'd like not to repeat. /shudder

When I was living in CA, I once found myself jumping out of our car after being bitten by a couple fire ants that had a mound underneath.

boiling water for the ants and fireballs for black widows outdoor and daddy long legs inside. Never found a way to keep the crickets from covering the house, when the sprayed the field next to the base though.

Housing had issues with the daddy long legs in every corner of the house until I told them of my fear of black widows.
