There'll always be some player who hasn't tested positive that everyone will latch onto as the potential savior of the stats. It wasn't so long ago that I remember people saying "man, I hate A-Rod, but I hope he breaks Bonds' record so it'll be clean again." And really, how come the players in the late 60's and 70's are apparently above this speculation and suspicion? Steroid use was rampant in the NFL; do people truly believe that they weren't widespread in MLB until Canseco? Sh*t, how do you know Hank Aaron didn't use steroids?

People try to make out the long-standing records as sacrosanct, but players have always, always done whatever they could to get an edge. Fans and players alike look back with fondness on the days where the catcher would put extra oil on his glove so the ball would have a little extra on it when he threw it back to the pitcher. Spitballs, nail files, amphetamines, and worse are found throughout the history of the game. The numbers put up in the so-called "Steroid Era" are every bit as valid as the numbers in previous eras.

I'm not saying I have proof either way, but innocent until proven guilty and all that. And if you've watched Albert from the beginning, you understand that he has put up solid numbers since day 1. There has never been a sudden increase in production from Albert that is typical with most substance users. I mean... look at his major league stats (protip: look at the strikeouts column, a number that can't be artificially enhanced by drugs...). At this time, I refuse to believe someone so consistently stellar is a product of PEDs. He's like a Tiger Woods or a Michael Jordan to me, and I hope that view never gets tarnished.

Rodriguez's numbers have been pretty consistent over the course of his career.

Since 2001 season began (Albert's first season):

Games Played:
Alex Rodriguez: 1252
Albert Pujols: 1239

On-base percentage:
Alex Rodriguez: .398
Albert Pujols: .425

Strikeouts:
Alex Rodriguez: 1025
Albert Pujols: 506

Fielding Errors:
Alex Rodriguez: 108
Albert Pujols: 79

There are a lot of decent hitters out there, but hitting is one of the first things PEDs improve. I like to think some of the other stats are better indicators of great talent, and not merely drug use.

I never said Rodriguez was a better player or anything like that. All I said was that he's been consistent.

Fair enough. I was just supplementing my evidence for Albert's greatness. Smiley: grin

Raffy Palmiero was one of my favorite ballplayers when I was little. I wholeheartedly believed him when he pointed his finger at Congress. Man, having your childhood heroes torn down really sucks. Smiley: lol

At least I can still hold on to the hope that nothing ever comes out about Cal, Jr. using them. Smiley: lol

Rodriguez being a shortstop is what makes him better, ignoring the steroid issue.

(Well, was a shortstop. Should still be one really, he was a better fielder than Jeter.)

Meh, he's LA's problem now.

I <3 Jason Bay.

AS for tarnishing the 2 World Series' the Red Sox won this decade...

Manny passed 15 tests in a row (since their inception in 04') before this one.

So all you Yankees fans can continue to fuck right off.

Yes, I'm sure they were all clean. Smiley: rolleyes

I'm not saying Manny was or wasn't on PED during his time with the Red Sox. What I am saying is if you believe that passing a bunch of drug tests for MLB means they're not on anything, I've got a bridge you might be interested in buying. Sh*t, if you believe they were all clean, you must believe when someone gets caught and they say they only used it once. Smiley: laugh

I was talking about Manny being "clean" over that time. I could give 2 ***** about anyone else.

You can't seriously think Manny was clean over that time. What, did he wait until after his $100M deal with the Sox and after his $45M deal with the Dodgers to start using?

He tested negative then!

Anyhoo, A-Rod was doping too so it is certainly an issue that the two of the "best" hitters in baseball (With the stats & pay to back it up) doped.

All it comes down to here though, is that we Fenway Faithful can't make fun of A-Rod for doping anymore.

We can STILL bring the mirrors and kiss ourselves though.

So the report is that he tested positive for female fertility drugs. Cue the bad puns and T-shirt slogans:

Manny being Manuela
Manny being Tranny
Hitting Mannypause
OctoManny
Manny being Mammary
