Then why not just merge the two and create another?
Because the Asylum's political debate trend and the OoT's "let's be random and have fun together, while sometimes talking about real things" trend don't mesh well together? I tried my luck at the Asylum maybe... 5 years ago? It didn't go so well. So I sucked it up, than began my OoT lurking. I just don't fit in the Asylum because I hate politics, economics, religion and similar stuff. The OoT was more of my thing, since it's like a group of friends having lunch together, with conversations ranging from apples to zoophiles.

Both forums have different dynamics, and mixing them together wouldn't work at all. My personal suggestion was to quit moderating the Asylum and the OoT, but instead create an hypermoderated forum for sensitive forum virgins that can't handle the Internet and "mean" people and where you can't post if you have over 1000 posts.

Seems reasonable.

No, I don't think it is. The idea that the Asylum is mostly a political forum largely comes from ignorance. Most threads revolve around politics because politics is the dynamic application of what people believe. It's shorthand, really. We largely know where one another stand on issues, so a thread about the next SCOTUS justice encompasses 100 other threads we've already carried to 20 pages about economics, or social theory, or free speech, or free will, or whatever. There's a gigabyte of text of me giving Gbaji economics lessons. There's another of Joph explaining why he finds Christianity to be a viable concept. There's probably ten threads directly addressing what you'd post about in the OOT, we've just already been there.

We don't know what YOU think, however. It's quite possible we'll find your ideas to be idiotic. It's quite possible they're be provably wrong and we'll prove them wrong. It's quite possible they'll be exactly where most people here are. The only way to find out is to post something and either have the rhetorical chops to exchange differing points of view colorfully or have the sense of humor to deal with being ridiculed. Neither of these requires you caring about who the Junior Senator from Nebraska is.

It does demand more thinking than posting picture of a cat wearing a sombrero, though.

The real difference is some people choose to laugh at LOLCATS and then there's people who do. I for one like to watch Bill Moyers Journal but that doesn't mean I want to sit on a forum and discuss politics at any level. I am however a big fan of classic, independent, and silent movies which doesn't get a lot of attention in a forum obsessed with LOLCATS, but it would in say a politically minded forum. So they're at a crossroads, trying to decide what's off-topic, what's too radical, and what to do with posters who don't follow the rules when there's a perfectly good forum that designated for that.

Too bad you have to discuss those in =5. Maybe you'll get 3-5 responses in a week's time.

Nah. The real difference is some people laugh at LOLCATS, but get bored with them after the 900000th post of the same picture.

It's the same thing, it's either gut instinct to laugh or it's a 'I'm just trying to waste my day' laugh.

Yeah, I never really actually found the "Senji's a child-beater" thing to be funny until this whole shenanigan. I'll probably cease being amused by it in another hour or so.

The larger problem with merging the forums is that the threads that dominate the Asylum in its current state will likely be pushed to the bottom or even off the first page. Most of the OoTers who would weigh in on the threads generally already post in the Asylum. You're not going to generate that much more discussion on them. If you add the daily OoT "discussion" on top of that, the generally slower Asylum threads may just fall by the wayside.

Well. Here's my take on it. I suspect that certain types of posts occur in the OOT, and others in the asylum (such as said lolcats vs politics comparison), pretty much exactly because the folks posting in the asylum tend to talk politics and the folks in the OOT maybe talk lolcats (or whatever).

It's not like people can't skip over threads they aren't interested in. And yes, while I suppose there are some ****-retentive folks in the asylum (and in the OOT for that matter), who'll make a point of going into a thread on a subject they aren't interested in and expressing just how dumb and uninteresting that thread is, I suspect they'd be in the minority. Or at least the novelty would tend to wear off pretty quick.

It's not like there's ever been a magical wall preventing the big bad asylum posters from going into the OOT and tossing their condescending disapproval over the content and theme of the posts or anything. Yet, magically, the universe has managed to maintain order, the planet hasn't been knocked off it's alignment, and dogs and cats aren't sleeping together (too much). It's all pretty much in everyone's heads IMO. Post what you want in the threads you are interested in. Some of us like politics. Some of us are more interested in jokes. Some like lolcats. Some people juggle geese. Who can say? I'm just suggesting that if the problem is with some OOT posters getting a bit out of hand, maybe the correct solution is for them to post their out of hand stuff in the asylum and see how things go.

The asylum has never been segregated from the OOT based on theme. Just rating...
