The real difference is some people choose to laugh at LOLCATS and then there's people who do. I for one like to watch Bill Moyers Journal but that doesn't mean I want to sit on a forum and discuss politics at any level. I am however a big fan of classic, independent, and silent movies which doesn't get a lot of attention in a forum obsessed with LOLCATS, but it would in say a politically minded forum. So they're at a crossroads, trying to decide what's off-topic, what's too radical, and what to do with posters who don't follow the rules when there's a perfectly good forum that designated for that.
Well. Here's my take on it. I suspect that certain types of posts occur in the OOT, and others in the asylum (such as said lolcats vs politics comparison), pretty much exactly because the folks posting in the asylum tend to talk politics and the folks in the OOT maybe talk lolcats (or whatever).
It's not like people can't skip over threads they aren't interested in. And yes, while I suppose there are some ****-retentive folks in the asylum (and in the OOT for that matter), who'll make a point of going into a thread on a subject they aren't interested in and expressing just how dumb and uninteresting that thread is, I suspect they'd be in the minority. Or at least the novelty would tend to wear off pretty quick.
It's not like there's ever been a magical wall preventing the big bad asylum posters from going into the OOT and tossing their condescending disapproval over the content and theme of the posts or anything. Yet, magically, the universe has managed to maintain order, the planet hasn't been knocked off it's alignment, and dogs and cats aren't sleeping together (too much). It's all pretty much in everyone's heads IMO. Post what you want in the threads you are interested in. Some of us like politics. Some of us are more interested in jokes. Some like lolcats. Some people juggle geese. Who can say? I'm just suggesting that if the problem is with some OOT posters getting a bit out of hand, maybe the correct solution is for them to post their out of hand stuff in the asylum and see how things go.
The asylum has never been segregated from the OOT based on theme. Just rating...
