If it stopped raining for more than two days around here (especially on the weekends), I'd have my garden put in. Instead, I'm watching my lawn reach Venusian jungle status.

Jophed,

lmao...I was expecting it to rain yesterday and still waiting on it. The weathermen in this valley have no idea what's going on with the weather. They can never tell what's going to make it through the smokies to our valley.

The rain here has the ground too wet to work on the few days it been nice and sunny.

Varus, you should try planting in 4 by 4 square beds instead of rows. You can get higher yields and if you use raise beds can cut down the weeding by using Mel's Mix.

Planting season is also when Jonwin and I are busy with preparing for conventions and retreats we are involved in, so I'm lucky to have found time yesterday to start some herbs in pots.

If I have time next week and ground is dry enough I plan to get in some bush beans and radishes.

Just read up on Sq Ft Gardening at Mels web site.I'm sure you could use the soaker hoses without much trouble. Mel made some changes since the original show was first air on PBS.

My ex and I did part of our garden in Ca. using the old method, and only problem was getting the Johnson Grass dug up back then. Yields were great from a 2 by 4 area of pole beans Carrots, tomatoes and radishes did well too. We did companion planting also. Tomatoes really dod love carrots.

If I can get the frames made next week, I'll be looking at buy the compost, peat moss and coarse vermiculite to fill them. Of course since I don't have large yard I'll be going with boxes no more then 2 feet deep along the fence and one or 2 4x4 boxes along the side walk.

My wife planted a packet worth of tomato seeds into a set of planters a few weeks ago and they're starting to get big.

My dad had put a compost barrel in the back of the house years ago and used to use it all the time, but since he passed it hasn't been taken care of. When I opened it it was dry, cobwebby and full of shredded paper. I've since put some leaves, rotting logs and coffee grinds in, with some fresh dirt and water, and hope to get it started again. The little soil in the bottom is barely useable. But there's a stream that flows through our property and after overflowing into the yard the past few years, it has left a great bed of wonderful soil in its wake which is what I've used for the tomatoes and to fill out the flowerbed.
