CNN is reporting that Arlen Specter is switching to the Democrats. Once Franken finishes his court battle, that'll be 60 Democrats in the Senate caucus.

Not that I expect Specter to be a partyline liberal democrat but this is... wow. Unexpected.

Yeah, I just saw that. I'm kinda dumbfounded, honestly; but then, I haven't really thought about Specter's politics in years.

He has to be pretty close to the end of his career. Probably just wants to get some pet projects pushed through/be on a relevant committee, and being on the winning team is how to do that.

I'll readily admit that I'm parroting other sources, not being an expert in Pennsylvania politics:

Specter is facing a tough primary battle against Somefirstname Toomey, a hard-line conservative. Pennsylvania has a closed primary system and many moderate Republicans changed party identification to Independent/Democratic for the presidental primaries. So the bulk of who's left to vote in the in Republican Senate primary is harder-right party members. Specter's been getting pressure to change his ways and appeal to the Right to have any chance of winning the primary.

As a side note, most folks I've heard with an opinion think that Toomey would lose the general Senate race since he has little appeal to moderate voters.

Specter is liked among independents & moderate democrats. He could potentially win a Democratic primary and the general. He won't win the Republican primary.

Free Republic -- It's where conservatives go to eat their heaping spoonful of crazy.

Not that there's not liberal versions of the same but those aren't as much fun in times like this.

Social conservatives, that is. Fiscal conservatives, I dunno where they go. Straight into a bottle for the past decade I'd imagine.

Yeah. I think it's sad. And scary. Scary that so many people are so caught up in such meaningless acrimony.

I hope I'm not viewed like that by people who don't share my opinions.

Apparentlhy Harry Reid was told that Spector agreed to caucus with the Dems yesterday. This means that right now, Spector as a Dem is occupying Republican slated committee assignments. The Republicans will most certainly demand reassignments on those committees now, but there's rumor mongoring that the Dems will demand that Franken's win be certified and him seated as a bargaining chip for reassigning those committee spots.

The Dems already had the upper hand, but now they hold all the cards.

For the record, Spector's own constituancy is pleased as punch over his switch, based on a quickie poll.

The Republican party only have themselves to blame. When you have a shrinking party in disarray, calling certain Senators RINOS and marginalizing them is not the way to go.

Meh. Not bad news, but not hugely significant. His votes on cloture or issues that I care about are unlikely to change. I'm not an expert on Pennsylvania politics, either, but this strikes me as a largely survival driven inside baseball move.

True and I pretty much agree. Although now he'll have to balance his votes against surviving as a Democrat versus surviving as a Republican. I don't know how dramatic a shift that'll be but I assume it will be a shift.
