I wasn't "attached" to the 701st

My mistake, I see you posted "assigned". When you posted that you "volunteered" I did make an assumption that you were already in the military in a non combat capacity but wanted to heroically fight our evil foes. What the fuck did you mean? That you weren't drafted in '90? That you were so outraged over the invasion of Kuwait that you ran down to a recruiter, made it through all of your training and were deployed?

I admit I read the wrong word there, but for the life of me I can't figure out what the actual ones are supposed to mean. Help a brother out.

I still want him to answer my questions at least

I wouldn't hold my breath, were I you. Here's what I assume will happen:

Coalheart will leave this thread for the day. He may post again, but it will be summed up by "I refuse to answer any questions until you do" on the assumption that I'm as full of **** as he is and that, like a poker game, his only hope of success is to raise the stakes as much as he can and attempt to divert the discussion to me.

As I've been open about my career on this board previously and have suffered adverse life consequences as a result, I won't be answering any specific questions. Really, I've made an effort to avoid the subject entirely for years, and to a certain extent let my ego get the better of me lately. Regardless, Mr. Heart will offer nothing further, and there will be no satisfying resolution.

I just assumed you still did that poker thing, and maybe moonlighted as some kind of vagabond. Smiley: thumbsup

Oh, I do. My work now, I talk about all the time. My career in the 90's and early 2000's that led to what they would have called in the 70's a "nervous breakdown" I try to avoid talking about for reasons of self preservation.

I don't really have a "career" now. I play poker and consult in various capacities. Lately more consulting as my current contract continues to be extended seemingly endlessly. I haven't played serious poker in months, because risk free money is risk free money and I'm not really one to walk away from something if it's unfinished. The fact that the idiots who pay me far too much continue to sabotage their own data architecture is just happenstance. I'd planned on being back to playing in January.

The synopsis for that alone depressed the **** out of me. I'm sure it's meant to just be humorous satire but it sounds like a glorification of consequentialism, from the perspective of people that normally disdain consequentialism. Kind of saddening.

Hell, I'm trying. You're demanding specific details about my life from almost 20 years ago. From memory ( I have no idea where any paperwork other than my DD214 is) was it was 3rd Brigade Infantry.

Does that help? I surely hope so, as that's pretty much all I can remember.

I'm not even sure what this attempting to answer, leaving aside the fact that it also makes no sense. I realize how difficult it must be after all this time to remember the name of the ******* unit you went to war with. Why, that would be like recalling the name of the University one graduated from. No mean feat.

I spent about five minutes trying to link that with Chuang-tzu and the immense personal identity crisis that existing in two halves would be if only you could experience it, but it wasn't really working.

Clarification, not link, make a clever joke about; linking is easy. Spontaneity though, not my strong suit.

At the time in question, I was working the counter at a convenience store. A friend of mine did go to Iraq. I know he was in the Marine Reserves and drove an M60. From that, a minute of googling tells me he was presumably in 4th Tank Battalion, but hey, what do I know.

Things I learned on his return:

1. Tanks drive though houses quite well.

2. You can roll a tank on a hill/dune, and it's hard to find a tow truck in the middle of the desert.

3. Even our crappy tanks outranged their best by about 50% (some 700 yards or so), which apparently makes tank engagements something like shooting fish in a barrel, even when the other guys aren't buried turret-deep in sand.

4. The M1s drive-n-fire speed is much higher than the declassified specs (shocker, I know), and were, in his words "Really ************** I think he was jealous...
