Department of Homeland Security has taken 'over the situation' here in the states regarding the Swine Flu. I'm not concerned about getting the flu, but somehow, knowing Homeland Security has usurped the situation from the health officials doesn't make me feel warm, cozy and germ-free.

Given their track record, I'm not exactly optimistic.

(Will Mexico City be knee deep in flu victims as DHS says "Heckuva job!" ? Stay tuned to find out!)

As a California resident, I welcome them....maybe we can openly address the issues brought on by a porous national boundary.

Face it folks, we border a third-world nation, and this is not the first indication of such... we have seen a nice resurgence of several "eradicated"
disease'.

Our laws dont provide much protection : As a contract employee at a County facility I have gotten several calls from the Public Health Office warning us about clients that had been told not to use the facility bue to ccommunicable disease....but became angry & stated they would continue anyway....PHO was unable to provide us names due to HIPPA & other laws & policies.

(including "Dont ask dont tell" on immigration status)

Treatment resistant Tuberculosis is especially fun to contemplate.

Oddly enough, this strain of TB is because of TB eradication efforts. Only the strong strains survive! Here come the super diseases...

Mexico City may be slightly out of the US Department of Homeland Security's bailiwick.

This being just one problem I can see with DHS being in charge. CDC, while still certainly a federal agency, is not nearly has confined by borders, regulations, etc.

I'm on a public health mailing list for Maine. Here's a piece of an email that came into my mailbox over the weekend:

Maine CDC wrote:
Update on Swine Influenza:

US:
8 confirmed cases in the US (southern CA and TX), average age is 16, most are teenagers, with no known contact with swine and only one with recent known travel to Mexico
Virus is thus far resistant to two antivirals (amantadine and rimantidine) and susceptible to two (tamiflu and relenza – the same two that the Gov’s proposed budget request was for)
A number more in the US are being tested in several states, including high school students in NYC
All confirmed cases in the US have fully recovered

Mexico:
CNN is reporting more than 1,000 with a swine influenza strain in Mexico City area, with at least 60 dead
Mexico City and the surrounding state has closed schools, day cares, libraries, etc.
Most of the people affected appear to be otherwise healthy children and young adults

Canada
There is at least one confirmed case in Canada in someone who traveled to Mexico City

This influenza virus is very unusual – it has genetic components of swine influenza, avian influenza, and human influenza. There appears to be significant human-to-human transmission.

I have to admit I did laugh when some pol suggested closing the border as a possible action item.

I can see serious potential for violence if this thing does take off, though. Smiley: frown

And as always web comics have the best answer.

I sure do hope I live to meet Mother Abigail!

As suspected, Madagascar is safe...I wonder if they've closed their shipping lanes.

Strangely enough, Madagascar has the only verified case of drug resistant bubonic plague on records.

Why bring up Madagascar? What do you know? WHAT DO YOU KNOW?

To be fair this is not entirely the fault of the illegal immigrants, housewives with too much time on their hands, who get their vaccination advice from Jenny McCarty are also to blame. The latest disease to make its reappearance in our area is Whooping Cough.

Don't want to get you baby vaccinated? Good, now you get to listen to him cough his head off for the next 100 days and nights.

I can't figure out how to interact with anything except the GO button. I'm too stupid to be a virus, apparently.

I caught whooping cough a few years back. Your vaccination of that wears off after 20ish years, so you're supposed to get a booster in your late teens. Apparently I didn't, so for six weeks I was coughing up stringy white crap so violently my office sent me home for being too noisy.

They're cool with you coughing up stringy white crap so long as you do it quietly?

Not that I'm doubting you -- that sounds about right for the modern officeplace.

Low

Those lazy Messicans took waaay too long to report it to CDC, but thankfully, most of the sufferers in USA, Canadia, UK etc report mild symptoms. If it had been a virulent avian strain we'd be sending 'em a nucular reminder.

One has to ask of the 100 or so that died, what were their co-morbidities? My guess is a significant proportion are likely to have been frail elderly, or sufferers from a pre-existing condition that weakened their ability.

In before ToUtem points out that this is a wake up call to the White Man to shun the eating of unclean porcine critters.

Insh'allah, if it becomes pandemic, the Jews, Muzzies and Vegans will be safe. Think on it pilgrims. Think on it.
