Ambrya,

Despite your twisted logic the FACT remains that homosexuals are 60 times more likely to contract std's. Which is why they can't donate blood. But you don't want to hear about that.

Let's assume there's no health risk in engaging in homosexual activity. By far the majority of this country is opposed to homosexual marriage. That should be enough. Govn's legislate morality all the time how is this any different? What rights are being denied homosexuals?

For the millionth time, large portions of the population didn't want slavery abolished, women/minority voting rights, interracial marriage, or a slew of other human rights repressions to be overturned. The will of the people is not always right.

Cite please? Preferably one that isn't to a "family values" site with defunct links?

If you can back up your assertions with hard numbers, do so and I'm perfectly willing to consider them valid. But the problem is, you haven't done so. I've linked an actual scientific study. You've linked...propaganda.

Better yet, let's just acknowledge that unless you're Typhoid Mary, the possibility of spreading disease is not now nor ever has been justification for denying American citizens equal rights.

Link your numbers. I've got a toddler at my knees expecting us to go run errands so I don't have time to look up the stats, but considering that most DOMA acts have passed by a margin of less than 10%, I'd say "by far" is an extreme exaggeration.

And where from 71% do you get "60 times more likely"? 71% means gay males have twice the rate, not 60x.

If anything the homosexual community is trying to force something on the people they don't want.

But you don't care about that.

It tells me that California isn't as progressive as Iowa. Which is fucking sad.

I don't want gay marraige because I'm not gay. However, my straight, christian (ha!) marraige hasn't imploded because of the ruling. I'm for equal rights. Plain and simple.

But, the slippery slope! Pretty soon, we'll ALL be gay married! Gay married to children and dogs! THERE WILL BE ANARCHY!

Yeah, well now we're into the people who didn't prepare to speak but felt compelled to in response to something someone else said, so they're less likely to be concise or clear. I'll forgive them.

I hope they're done and vote in the next fifteen minutes because I have a stupid meeting and will be distracted. Ugh.

CA passing Prop 8 was probably the best thing to happen to the gay rights movement. Beforehand, a state passing a law prohibiting gay marriage passed under everyone's radar, mostly because these laws didn't take away a right the people already had.

The entire Yes vs. No on Prop 8 campaign made it into the mainstream media. Everyone was aware of it. The people of a state flat out removed an existing right after a campaign based solely on convincing people through a variety of twisted facts, lies and some general bigotry - and it was well publicized.

The country isn't far more conservative. Polls are finding more and more that a majority of people support same-sex marriage/unions. People just generally don't give a fuck, and it's only going to continue to trend that way.

87-61 passes in the House, now back to the Senate (who voted in favor last week) then on to the governor, go Maine!

ETA: Oh wait, they still have to debate the potential amendment.

Edit again: YAY no amendment (to send straight to referendum), final vote 89-58 w/o amendment!

Nexa,

Good for Maine. If that's the will of the people there so be it. What i'm against is forcing people to recognize a behaviour they believe to be immoral. If it's the will of the people of a particular state to legalize gay marriage fine. That doesn't mean the states that are against it should have to.

See how that works?

Good for you. I'm glad it wasn't the case for interracial marriage though, and so is the head of the NAACP. The rights of a minority should never be decided by majority rule.
