Looking back at navy construction and the loss of the U.S. forests to the RN.
White and yellow pine.
Spruce.
I know a bit of timber was coming from Norway/Sweden and Canada did fill in some timber needs.
Live Oak however is a southern wood and I dont know if it grows anywhere else.
Thanks
Quarter Gunner Jonwin.

If you want to see me on the Constellation got to youtube and search sea monkey visits Constellation. Im the seagull as I used an illusion potion.

White & yellow pine (at least as I know them) are native to the US and Canada, ranging across nearly all of North America to greater or lesser degrees. There's other "White" pines but they're native to China. I assume there are native English pines but they're not what we'd classify as white or yellow.

I believe the only native European spruces are confined in natural range to Scandinavia & central Europe.

All I have to say is that you should make your mark on that unknown docent, next time you use an illusion potion. He is a rather conceited gunner mate.

Never get in between An Australian and a Huon Pine.

It's like the Meth of all woodlover's timber, and they are so rare now (Incredibly more slow growing than the European settlers originally realised, 2000 years to reach maturity) that no one is permitted to cut live trees, and won't be for centuries yet. So the only source is recycled timber. Which if anyone realises what they've got, they can name any price for.

Same now for Southern Live Oak in the US. You can't cut it, but if a hurricane knocks it down it can be harvested. The Whaler Charles W. Morgan was able to buy some from that Katrina knocked down for her hull restoration.
The Navy still owns large acre's of live oak and other wood from the days of only building wooden ships.
Edit to correct name of oak.

In California, there are coast live oaks everywhere. I'm not sure if they are protected - I think my local University must have knocked some down during recent construction expansions - if they are I've never heard of it. However, I'm not sure anyone would want to build anything out of them. They often grow like bushes. Wikipedia says they are classified in with "red oaks" so they may not be what you guys are talking about. (Side note: I always heard them refered to as California live oaks, not coast live oaks, but it seems they are one and the same.)

I use to love driving through the Central Valley in the winter, when the fog wasn't too bad for driving and seeing the Coast Live Oaks cover with Mistletoe. I would also expect you could get the answer to your question, from the Ship's carpenter.

Just don't bring home any more wood plugs. They seem to be more under the bookcase, each time I try to do what little house work I can get away with. Not to mention all the ones that are in the front hall, under the large pile of boxes and junk that we never get around to clearing out.

Yes we are Pack rats in an old house, who don't spend much time on dusting.

I'm lucky to have gotten some of the junk of my art/craft table today. And Daughter removing M&M's doesn't count.
