Was out for the day yesterday, so missed this tidbit.

Item of interest:

Article wrote:
In the U.S. Senate, Mississippi Sens. Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker, both Republicans, finished first and third respectively in overall earmark requests and brought home more than $1 billion in government cash for their state.

Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Dan Inouye of Hawaii finished second with $444.9 million in requests. Rounding out the top five were Sens. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., at $386 million and Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, with $382.7 million.

Over in the House of Representatives, Hawaii Democratic Reps. Neil Abercrombie and Mazie Hirono teamed up to bring nearly $500 million dollars to America's 50th state.

Abercrombie took home the most earmarked dollars -- $256.8 million, followed by South Dakota Rep. Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin with $230 million, Hirono with $202.6 million, Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va., with $183.5 million and Rep. Bill Young, R-Alaska, with $167.5 million.

CAGW representatives attacked Congress and President Obama for not doing more to reduce wasteful spending, noting that the president had a chance to draw a line when it came to earmarks when he received the $410 billion spending bill last month that included all the pork money.

"Vetoing the omnibus would have sent a very strong signal to congress, to the big spenders, to the appropriators, to everyone that change had truly come to Washington, D.C. Unfortunately we are seeing more of the same," Williams said, as a mascot in a pig costume shook its head.

Tripe like this is why Republicans will continue to lose elections. One must walk the walk, not simply talk the talk.

If you claim to be for smaller government, you damn well better toe the line. Hypocrisy makes for weak leadership.

So true, so true.

I think that's why the Republican party has lost a lot of steam over the years. Its own leadership indulges in the very things the party is ideologically against, from earmarks to gay sex in bathroom stalls to hookers to having an affair while calling for the head of other people having affairs.

The Democratic leadership also fell plague to this in the early 1990s, but the Dems learned the hard way they they had to clean out the trash in order to get true leaders in place. There's still a ton of Dem trash to clean up, for that matter. It's an ongoing process. If the Republicans can acknowledge this too in the next few election cycles, then perhaps this is hope for the party.

I think the issue here is that we label people with all that comes with the side they're on. Someone can be Republican and still be for big spending. They may just be social conservatives. Someone could be free loving and still be a cheap old ******* Republican. Same could be said for Dems. Some are free spenders, but socially conservative, or lean so. Or, they could be frugal spenders but want equality for all. you don't have to agree with every aspect of your party as long as you agree with most.

At least, that's my view, coming from a 3 party system where two of them are almost completely interchangeable and seeing politicians flip flop from one party to another isn't unheard of.

(A) I don't care about earmarks. Sure, some are undoubtably silly or unneeded but by in large they're an effective method for legislators to target spending to specific projects in their bailiwick. It's a great irony that people have been trained to say "What has that politican done for us back home lately?!" out of one side of their mouth while ******** about nebulous earmarks from the other.

(B) Point (a) aside, it's amusing to me to see Republicans singled out with this since the "OMG EARMARKS!" issue is primarily a GOP generated one.

I'm torn. No, not on the article... on this thread.

I actually agree with this view. Hypocrisy is hilarious and terrible. It scares me that I agree with you though. I might be going crazy.

The torn part comes in when I realize that not all earmarks are bad things. This is kinda like "Well, this is the more clandestine spending, and we don't know if it's bad or good." I mean, it could theoretically be going toward good projects and uses. But it could also be getting spent on nothing. Just because it's earmarked doesn't make it good or bad. It's just a lousy way to do things most times, and will usually be CALLED pork, no matter what it is.

Aye, it was with that in mind that I started the thread.

While this is true, it brings to mind the old adage "give no appearance of evil". The truth is this - the vast majority of America is quite willing to watch a few minutes of television feeds per day, call it 'the news', and make their decisions based off of incomplete data (to put it mildly). Whether these projects would be 'good' or not is close to immaterial, since they will be perceived by the public as bad. Thus hypocrisy leads to political suicide, though only in this instance, since in many other cases hypocrisy is easily glossed over with 'corrections', 'if I knew then what I knew now', 'reviewed myself', and 'I voted for it before I voted against it'.

In any event, voters will rghtly take note of this and disregard complaints about earmarks by the GOP, when the GOP is equally at fault over it. Perhaps the GOP simply needs to be replaced, Whigs >> Republican >> ???
