Jeanne Thomas was sitting at her desk at work when she decided to check the security camera that she installed in her home. The Thomas home had been burglarized before, so she installed a monitoring device where she can watch a live video feed of the camera in her home.

When Thomas decided to pull up the feed of her house Wednesday morning, she couldn't believe what she saw. There was someone inside her home, someone she didn't know. Thomas picked up the phone and called 911.

"I'm watching my home on live monitor, and there is a black man in my house, and he is robbing it," she told the dispatcher. The woman on the other end of the call asked Thomas where she was, and Thomas replied, "I'm in Fort Lauderdale, at my work."

To be fair, it's not like it was really all that likely that they'd hit one of the houses with a video surveillance setup, at the exact time that the owner happened to be watching it.

It would be really easy to set it up with a movement detection system that would alert you. Send an email, ping your server and send you a growl.

The cat would set it off all the time.

If you put it a few feet off the ground it's unlikely. Or if you have a computer engineering or computer science degree you could write software to analyze the video and differentiate between a cat sized moving object and a bigger one. It's actually a lot of fun. Not very realistic I suppose.

You mean like those cheap motion sensor flood lights that you can adjust to not pick up pets and animals? Yeah, I'm sure motion sensor cameras' technology isn't that advanced yet. Smiley: rolleyes

We've got motion alarms in the truck bays at work, and they are adjusted to ignore small animals.

The only thing that sets them off besides people are the occasional stray deer, maybe dog or on rare occasion a large raccoon or opossum

Most modern motion detection devices / software offer an option to detect only a certain fill factor. That is, N% of pixels must change from frame to frame over X frames to trigger the detection.

Wouldn't this be a burglary in progress? Isn't a home invasion a burglary on an occupied home? Or has it been adjusted to encompass everything to make it just that much more dramatic?

That's what I always thought a home invasion was... but I guess you can't fault CNN for jazzing it up a little.

I like how the burglar was black.

Would you rather them lie and say it was a white upper class CEO who did it?

That'd just be silly. The big CEOs don't rob people home by home. They just use the government to rob everyone at once.

That's what happens when you don't paint your house the right colour for the neighborhood.
