It's so past bedtime here.

Not really that strangely, I was thinking of that very comic.

Half three over there, right? That's pretty early to be going to bed. ****, there's an xkcd for that, too. Well, actually there are several, but I'm thinking of the one with santa, not the morning from taipei one or the one with the longer day one.

Their lifestyle also makes some unhappy.

"They promote the use of drugs - chewing khat [a stimulant which keeps one alert] and smoking hashish - and alcohol," Mr Hassan says.

There have been both positive and negative effects of the pirates' economic success. Local residents have complained that the presence of so many armed men makes them feel insecure, and that their freespending ways cause wild fluctuations in the local exchange rate. Others fault them for excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages and khat.

Not exactly hardline Muslim behavior, is it? Sounds more like the behavior of, well...pirates.

Just because they may happen to be Muslim doesn't necessarily mean they're terrorists. Criminals, yes, and out for a profit. They also appear to have a high regard for human life, their own as well as their victims'...

The crew on MV Faina are reportedly being well-looked after

"They wed the most beautiful girls; they are building big houses; they have new cars; new guns," he says.

"Piracy in many ways is socially acceptable. They have become fashionable."

Most of them are aged between 20 and 35 years - in it for the money.

And the rewards they receive are rich in a country where almost half the population need food aid after 17 years of non-stop conflict.

Most vessels captured in the busy shipping lanes of the Gulf of Aden fetch on average a ransom of $2m.

This is why their hostages are well looked after.

The BBC's reporter in Puntland, Ahmed Mohamed Ali, says it also explains the tight operation the pirates run.

They are never seen fighting because the promise of money keeps them together.

Wounded pirates are seldom seen and our reporter says he has never heard of residents along Puntland's coast finding a body washed ashore.

Given Somalia's history of clan warfare, this is quite a feat.

It probably explains why a report of a deadly shoot-out amongst the pirates onboard the MV Faina was denied by the vessel's hijackers.

Pirate spokesman Sugule Ali told the BBC Somali Service at the time: "Everybody is happy. We were firing guns to celebrate Eid."

Wikipedia wrote:
Hostages seized by the pirates usually have to wait 45 days or more for the ships' owners to pay the ransom and secure their release, but the pirates' treatment of the hostages is relatively humane, and their reputation for turning over the ship, cargo and crew over upon receipt of the demanded ransom has been cited as a reason for their continued success in having their demands met.

If these were terrorists, they'd be boarding with bomb vests and just blowing the ship and crew to pieces.

So it would appear that your rank bigotry and ignorance is clouding your arguments yet again, varus. Though no one here seems to be surprised...

They're MUSLIM pirates. Do you simply think once they receive a ransom they're just going to retire on their own island with all their newfound riches?

Honestly, considering that they target ships from many different countries, including Muslim ones, I assume that the money will be used to buy a better ship to pirate things with.

Varus, look, not every event where something is hijacked or attacked is a terrorist attack. Sure, you can say that Obama should do something about this, but what's he gonna do? Send a cruiser to sink the lifeboat that the pirates are on? This is a MINOR event, when there are far more important things to worry about in the world, we don't need to be obsessing over pirates hijacking a ship. You're just angry because it's an american ship. I'll take you seriously on this matter when you start caring about the ships from other countries that have fallen prey to these pirates.

edit: my friend's laptop's buttons are in wierd places so i keep mispelling things.

What if they hijack a Japanese ship? Or a Danish, or Greek ship? Are they not terrorists then?

Please, try to find any reference to these incidents being terrorism-related in nature. A specific mention of the word terrorist would be nice, not just a baseless claim that any aggressive action is by definition terrorism, because it isn't.

In any case, the pirates are at odds with "Islamist fighters". I think this would be a clear indication that they aren't necessarily on the same side.

Sure, if you happen to be a dirt merchant in Somalia and in comes some pirate who can actually afford to buy your dirt.

I bet the Carribean pirating industry was good for the grog merchants of Tortuga as well.

The captain being held hostage has been freed. Details are few, but three of the four Somali pirates are dead and the fourth in custody.

Sounds like they sent in the SEALs.

There are really two main problems with the somollii pirate situation. The U.S. lack of interest in the area, and the ******* ******** who keep paying the pirates off. A few million ransom per ship buys a ******** of RPG's and AK-47s. Yes, it's unfortunate a few people got captured by pirates. But the solution is not to negotiate with them, the solution is to take them out. Hard, fast, and with enough raw firepower that no band of pirates will spring up in their place. Destroy their bases. Destroy any town that harbors them. Harrass them with seals. Will hostages die? at this point almost certanly, but it would never have got to this point in the first place if the problem had been eliminated early on.

Instead of giving that million in ransom to the pirates, give it to the families of the hostages, and then avenge their loved ones.

Oh, and don't cancel all the new small combat ships which would be dealing with this whole piracy thing. Littoral combat ships are ok, but they are no destroyer.

And while we are at it, killing the F-22 in favor of the F-35 that cant even fly in desert conditions is ******* stupid!

Small Article

Sounds like the Captain jumped ship, the US guys attacked the pirates before they could react to the Captain. All done while one of the pirates were on a US Ship "negotiating". That pirate is now in custody.

Maybe they will think twice before attacking a US ship now?

This must be good for John McCain.

In other news, while the Navy SEALS were off doing awesome acts of heroism, the Obamas finally got a dog, a gift from Ted Kennedy. It's a Portuguese water dog named Bo. It's not quite a shelter or a rescue dog, but it was adopted from a family that wasn't working out for it, so the First Dog is still adopted and not bought from a puppy farm (like Biden's dog was.)

To make up for the fact that it's not a shelter mutt as promised, the Obamas are making a donation to the local DC animal shelter.

It's nice to have a president than can do more than one thing at the same time. Solve an international hostage crisis the same weekend he gets his kids a dog. Bush didn't have the attention span for that . . .
