Yes, slightly. Abstinence only education is slightly effective at reducing sexual activity, but it is grossly ineffective at reducing STD transmission and pregnancy. The small number of people not having sex is hugely offset by the larger amount having unprotected sex.

Yes. That's what I meant by social change is needed. And... <drumroll please> some sort of education about the benefits of abstinence and monogamy would seem to be a step in the right direction. You don't need to have some puritanical religious belief system to eyeball the situation and come to this conclusion.

No, you could just be functionally braindead. 10,000 years of data suggests that "some sort of education about the benefits of abstinence and monogamy" does nothing to stop the spread of STDs.

Because statistically, the availability of birth control tends to increase the rate of sexual activity and number of partners those within the society in question engage in. If the social change that is needed is to discourage this exact sort of behavior, then it would seem to be counter productive to hand out condoms at the same time, wouldn't it?

Handing out condoms only makes sense if you assume that the condoms will be used at a high enough rate to counter-act whatever existing or increased rate of sexual activity will occur after that point in time. Unfortunately, another statistical fact is that condoms usually aren't actually used correctly enough or consistently enough to counteract the increased sexual activity effects. The social effect is to change people habits such that they have sex more casually and with more partners, but the condoms only work if you have one and use it. Statistically, the social effect trumps the physical use of the condom pretty much every single time...
I'd like cites for these statistics, please.

Eh, maybe I just have too much going on or have been spoiled by being a member of the academic community and therefor surrounded by people doing actual research and enjoying learning, but the made up crap he spews just makes me sad at this point. I know that the regulars understand he's full of ****, but there are likely lurkers who haven't been around long enough to know better, and even larger are the number of people who just spew made up crap as though it's fact day after day after day and others who just believe it because it's in print. I'm sick to death of responding to letters to the editor because they have no standard for providing citations or even vaguely true 'facts'...it's just ******* depressing at this point. It's too much, and I have more important balls in the air at this point (har har), so you and Joph will just have to fight the good fight here.

Lack of condoms? No. I didn't say that, and the issue is more complex than that.

The rate at which people will ***** and the number of other people they'll ***** are going to depend on social perceptions about sex. Period.

Those social perceptions can be changed though, and providing condoms and encouraging their use tends to increase the likelihood of a society adopting a "***** more" viewpoint, while encouraging abstinence tends to increase the likelihood of the opposite viewpoint.

I didn't say that a lack of condoms would reduce the rate of sex or number of sexual partners. I said that instruction and encouragement of these populations to adopt the ideas of abstinence and monogamy would and that simultaneously dumping truckloads of free condoms on the population with pamphlets explaining about how they allow for safe sex is going to tend to make that solution less effective.

And Nexa? I've linked numerous cites and studies on this subject in the past. I'm not going to dig them up again. What's bizarre is you guys keep getting so caught up in your position that you can't see or think straight.

The only use for a condom is to have sex with someone you don't want to have a child with or whom you suspect might have an STD. That's all condoms do. It's somewhat absurd to argue that no one's going to do exactly that with their condoms. Of course they will. They'll have sex with people they don't want to have children with and those they aren't sure don't have STDs. It's one of those things that is so incredibly obvious, I can't figure out why some people refuse to acknowledge it.

That's what condoms are for. While they can certainly also be used by married couples to prevent pregnancy, that almost certainly accounts for only a tiny fraction of the total number of times they are used. Are you seriously arguing that people would have sex just as often and with just as many partners if they didn't have condoms and other forms of birth control available?

No, you haven't. You've quoted some Guttmacher study that said the opposite of what you claimed. In fact, I responded with a piece from the same institution noting that abstinence proponents took portions of that study out of context (as you did). You have also argued against other studies by the same institution, claiming that the authors didn't know what they were talking about. As I recall, that time was particularly amusing because I had the entire study in front of me whereas you had a trundicated version of the study conclusion and yet you persisted in insisting that you knew exactly how and why the study was wrong.

Now, just to be sure on this, I have another tab open where we have the Alla search results of every time Gbaji said abstinence. Hrrmm... nope, sorry, the "numerous cites and studies" you're claiming just aren't there.

This is different... way, way different... from you providing the statistical evidence I asked for and which you claim exists. I'd like to see that evidence, not some lame "I'm not going to!" retort.

In case anyone's actually curious, and you can look it up (google works), but the only long term difference shown in aggregate research of schools collecting data on outcomes of AO ed is that sexual attitudes and behavior stay the same but that AO students are less likely to use condoms, are less aware of STDs, and feel worse about themselves.

Ok. But when Elinda said that the thing that bothers her the most about religious people is their unending need to 'push' their faith on others, was this really what she was implying?
Now, now I didn't say that's what bothered me the most. I said that's what bothered many. I'm not terribly bothered except the time, only a few months ago, when the young men in suits dinged my doorbell as I was just stepping out of the shower. I should have tested their faith I guess.

What I personally find annoying is that my close devout relatives accept too much on faith - more than just their faith. My sis supported GW, not because she thought he was a good pres but because it was the choice of her family, her church and her god - she told me as much. I think that's pretty wishy-washy.

Quote:
In the context of her statement she certainly seemed to be suggesting that religious people somehow do this more or in a manner that is more intrusive than anyone else with any other idea or cause out there. Frankly, I feel that global warming advocates go far further to push their cause on me than just handing out informative bits of paper. They're actually demanding that a portion of my taxes pay for the things they want to do. I don't recall any religious organizations forcing me to pay for their activities.
People coming to your door is pretty pushy. Honestly, pushiness is not a complaint that I harbor towards god-fearing folks, however historically speaking, they used some pretty aggressive techniques to get people to bend to their will.

I could probably have issues with some over zealous anti-abortionists if it was something that I had need to encounter or confront more often. Shooting doctors you don't agree with is a bit extreme.

And what is your solution? At the moment there is no known cure. All we can do is prevent it. Sex with multiple partners is already rampant in Africa.

Yes. That's what I meant by social change is needed. And... <drumroll please> some sort of education about the benefits of abstinence and monogamy would seem to be a step in the right direction. Yes, abstinence education has done wonders for the teens here in the US. However we're not dealing with US high school kids that professional educators have access to in a classroom setting for 7 hours/day, 5 days a week. Duh, the society is fucked. While you are preparing to swoop down into the Sudan donning the S-gbaji cape and bearing the Acme Family-Maker, other more sensible types will be getting some condoms out to folks in hopes of slowing the spread of Aids.

Two points:

First, If transforming a society to the picture-perfect blissful family life you envision for your world had a simple easy fix we'd not still have troops in Iraq, we wouldn't have to feed the poor and a religious extremist would be nothing more than someone who prays in excess of 8 times a day.

Second, if your solution is to educate folks about the dangers and evils of multi-partner sex, well I think we should begin setting a good example right here at home. Will you vow to never lie with a women again unless and until you have tied the matrimonial knot - til death do you part?....and I assume you are a virgin til married yes?

Quote:
And yeah. Encouraging people not to have sex with multiple partners is a pretty good approach. Be honest. Do you oppose the idea because it wont work, or doesn't make sense? Or do you oppose it because you associate it with a religious agenda?
I don't oppose the idea. I also don't oppose the act of providing condoms to a disease ridden country.

Gbaji, which method do you think would be cheaper: shipping over condoms with instructions, or building up personnel/infrastructure for AO education in a country that lacks things like access to clean drinking water, construction equipment, etc. etc.

Gbaji is a man of many hats. In this thread he's a renowned sociologist, in another he's a CPA disputing how Joph files his taxes, and in another he's an expert on health care administration. And yet in the one tech thread this week he has no idea how Twitter works, the one field he actually owns a hat for. It's pretty trite, but hugely amusing.
