Nuts, allergies and bans oh my!Follow

Apparently banning the peanuts doesn't really help anything:

As usual, Jophiel is vindicated.

Anyone read the comments in that article? Those parents are WAY too overprotective and paranoid, no wonder their kids developed allergies.

From my experience, I can't think of a single kid I've known with allergies that didn't have overprotective parents, or was sheltered in someway. Seriously, let your kids go play outside.

That's funny, because I can't think of a single kid without legs I've known who wasn't carried around or pushed on some sort of wheeled conveyance like a ******* Pharaoh. I bet those little ******** would have been able to walk just fine if they weren't coddled.

Seriously, though, people thinking their kids are delicate flower made of brittle glass has been overdone for twenty years now.

RE: Allergies and overprotected children:

There is a hypothesis in the medical community that allergies are caused by lack of exposure to non-threatening bacteria and other substances as a child.

So: Get your kid his shots and then go let him play in the mud. You've probably reduced his chances of having allergies by a lot.

I drank sand from a sandbox with a straw once as a kid.

I don't know why I did it, but I had a straw with me, and decided that the sand flows easy enough, I could suck it out with a straw.

Eh, that's why it's a hypothesis, not a theory :P It's not completely proven. The idea, though, is that we do know the immune system in children has to be "primed" by exposure to germs and foreign substances. If you limit the exposure to household disinfectants, rather than letting them play in the sunshine and the dirt, the immune system starts getting hyper sensitive since it's underworked. If it's not exposed to pollen or peanuts, the immune system doesn't recognize them as friendly. So then one day you give the kid his first PB&J sammich and the immune system goes "AHAH this is a foreign substance we don't recognize, FINALLY!" And it panics and sends the kid into shock.

Lemme see if I can dig up some references . . .

Medwire: http://www.medwire-news.md/52/81370/Consumer_Health/Early_pet_exposure_may_help_prevent_allergies.html

Original source American Academy of Pediatrics (the article there is a pay one; this is a free summary from MSNBC): http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/27596933/

CCCEH (Summary repost): http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/108222.php

So. Give the kid shots against the most commonly acquired diseases that will kill him (so he doesn't pick up measles or whooping cough from the playground) then let him get as germed up as possible, with as many potential allergens as possible, as early as possible.

It baffles me...the wifes co-worker pratically keep their kid in a bubble and wonder why he gets flu-like colds every time he goes outside. I specifically tell my daughter to go shove her face in the dirt. Helps with immunities, and those little critters are extra protein!

Presumably they are having some success actually eliminating a peanut allergy in some kids by giving them small but increasing doses of peanuty stuff.

A STORY

I am living proof it's all crap. Smiley: grin

I have eaten PBJ since I can remember, I used to make my own lunches from at least the age of 8. PBJ on wheat bread, pringles, chocolate pudding and Tropical Punch Kool-aid... mmmmm

Now if I don't have antihistamines in my system and I am around peanuts, I get itchy, my lips get numb, I start coughing and my windpipe swells. You should see my arms and face atm since I popped a handful of Peanut M&M's and didn't have meds... I look like I am recovering from the chicken pox! ROFL

Well, immunology is an imperfect science. When did you start to develop the reactions to peanuts? Something could have triggered your immune system to decide that peants are The Great Evil. Like if you caught a flu virus and ate delicious peanut butter while your body was battling off the flu, it's possible your immune system tagged the peanut proteins at the same time it tagged the flu virus as Something To Be Eradicated.

I grew up in a smoke free home, and when I hit high school where people started smoking in bathrooms like @#%^s, I noticed I felt queasy in there. But it wasn't until college where I nearly ended up in the hospital from a reaction that I discovered just how sensitive I am to tobbaco smoke.

I am allergic to damn near everything now, but I was never kept in a super clean home. My dad smoked, drank and partied. When I was in high school I was tired a lot, I missed a lot of school, people thought I was lazy. Now I find out that there are several foods that act as sedatives to me and that was probably the issue. I have tons of other problems, all most likely allergy related.

DF it sounds like you develop an allergy to peanuts, like I did to crab meat. I ate crabs as a kid with never a problem until I was 19 and then broke out in hives so bad, I could barely open my eyes.

Thankfully for me it's just to crab meat and takes a few hours before I show any signs of an reaction from the time I eat crab meat. This is due to fact that the allergy is to a protein that forms as I digest the crab meat. Still it's no fun having to watch what you eat. I'm also allergic to sulfite's, so can't drink wine at restaurants with my meal. I tend to look for things that go well with ales or stouts. Since it's a protein that only seems to be from crab and not shrimp or lobster I'm still able to have my favorite shell fish.

Today my face is swollen due to eating some seafood salad, that Jonwin's mom made. He didn't get around to warning me, before I realize the wonderful taste in my mouth was crab meat. I finish my sandwich of roast beef and swiss cheese, (not aged so little treat of migraine) and then went to let Jonwin deal with the rest of my plate. I took Benadryl and went to bed early 6:00pm only getting up after 9 to take my evening medications. I am trying to function without taking more Benadryl today as I still need to run out and look at trims for costume.

Way I'm feeling, I may just put it off and go back to bed right now. At least I had lunch and can rest until dinner time.
