And haole means "foreigner," or more commonly "non-native Hawaiian" (also used a lot these days as a racial slur). It can mean mainlander, but it technically refers to white Hawaiians, usually the children of immigrants. And your OP is confusing... did you mean Native Hawaiians wouldn't get civil unions if this had passed, only "haoles?" Or actual mainlanders?
As for "brah," again, I've only ever heard that used by frat boys.
