Murfreesboro, TNFollow

So, I know a couple of Asylumites and Alla regulars are from Tennessee. I've just been accepted into graduate school at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro. Can any of you give me information about the area?

I'll be glad for any information I can get, but I'm really looking at cost of living. What are gas prices, apartment rental rates, and such like? What all is in the area as far as entertainment or housing?

Also, any information about MTSU would be nice. I've only really seen pictures; I'll tour the campus this summer in preparation for moving in, but I'd like it if anyone could tell me anything else at all about the university.

Feel free to PM me, I realize a lot of this is fairly niche information or something that you wouldn't necessarily want everyone to read.

Thank you for any responses!

First of all, the town is spelled "Murfreesboro".

I've lived there most of my life, only left to go to undergrad (and now) postgrad.

MTSU is a pretty big campus, and a real pain if you're stuck walking it. There are apartment complexes nearby the stadium side of campus, if you choose to not live on-campus. There are a LOT of clubs on campus, and the library is huge. It's really quite nice (as long as you don't have to walk it).

As for Murfreesboro itself...we're a pretty boring place, I guess. We have a couple nightclubs, if you are into that. We have three, yes, THREE bookstores. Barnes and Nobles, Books-a-million, and Hastings. Gas prices are around 1.73 at the moment, which isn't too bad. There are a lot of restaurants to eat at along Medical Center Parkway and along Broad Street, and we have MORE than our fair share of video game shops, for both new and old (like NES or before) games. There are two malls, Stones River Mall and the Venue.

Stones River Mall is more of the kind of mall where you would go for clothes, games, etc, while the Venue is more of the higher end type mall (expensive name brands, and the like).

Apartments, depending on where you live, can run from 500 dollars to 700+. Go here for general apartment pricing. You can also usually find fliers of people around campus looking for a roommate.

Word of caution: be careful of the red light cameras at certain busy intersections. There are a few of them scattered around town, and they are a PAIN. They were put in in the past year, and they are itchy on the shutter.

Side stuff:

When you come, you have to go to go to two places, Toots and Buster's. Toots is on Broad Street, nearby K-Mart, etc. It's a family place, that serves wings and stuff. It's been there since the 70's, and you can find a lot of people there on any given night. Busters is a family owned burger place with a very limited menu that is ALWAYS packed during lunch and dinner time. They have a bar as well, and you can just order a Buster cheeseburger (real meat from a local supplier), drink a beer, and watch whatever's on TV at the moment. It's nearby the intersection of Broad Street and Northfield.

Our radio stations are mostly country, with a couple current music stations, a couple oldies, and a MTSU jazz station. Enjoy.

If you drink, be aware that in Tennessee, alot of liquor can ONLY be sold in liquor stores. You won't be able to go to Krogers and purchase wine or vodka, for example. You can get beer...and that is pretty much it.

If you want to go swimming and don't feel like doing it at MTSU, you can go over to the Sportscom, which is a city-run gym of sorts, with a full pool and exercise facility for a nominal cost.

There is also a HUGE battle that took place during the Civil War, with a very large area of the battlefield perserved, called Stones River. You shouldn't have too much trouble finding it, I think.

If you want to go on nature walks along the actual Stones River, can hit up the Greenway. It's a good long trek, with a great view of the river.

Lastly, if you haven't been to Tennessee before, be aware that we are generally polite folk. Be nice to us, and we'll be MORE than welcoming to you. Be mean, and welll...the welcome mat might get pulled out from under ya.

If you need to know anything else, just shoot me a PM and I'll do my best to answer.

Looks like Nights covered it. I lived in Nashville most of my life and only went to the Boro when I dated a guy that was going to school there. From what I remember, it was a nice little town, though.

So that's about the equivalent of a high school honors program north of the Mason-Dixon line, right?

Decent science program and nursing school. Never spent a lot of time there myself.

I never went to MTSU myself, but I know it also has really good agriculture, music recording, and aerospace programs as well.

My husband graduated from MTSU. He enjoyed it. He has an English degree and (once he realized how useless that is) a journalism degree.

Gah, I can't believe I fudged the name like that. I suppose it's what I get for typing in a hurry at 1 am while I was doing something else.

Thanks for your replies, they're extremely helpful!

As to the "pretty boring place"... I'm from a town in South Carolina so small that we don't have a stop sign, much less a stoplight. I'm pretty sure it can't get worse than that. I'm just hoping Murfreesboro is a little less redneck than my town.

The restaurants are duly noted! I will be sure to check them out.
