Fuck saving the entire continent of Africa from malaria which will probably be the tipping point that lifts it all out of poverty.

I WANT ONE.

The laser, which has been dubbed a "weapon of mosquito destruction" fires at mosquitoes once it detects the audio frequency created by the beating of its wings.

The laser beam then destroys the mosquito, burning it on the spot.

Developed by some of the astrophysicists involved in what was known as the "Star Wars" anti-missile programs during the Cold War, the project is meant to prevent the spread of malaria.

Blah...blah...

Responding to questions about any potential harm the laser could pose to the eco-system, Kare said: "There is no such thing as a good mosquito, there's nothing that feeds exclusively on them. No one would miss mosquitoes," he said.

"In any case," he added. "The laser is able to distinguish between mosquitoes that go after people and those that aren't dangerous."

He added that other insects would not be affected by the laser's beam.

Blah...blah...

MOSQUITO DEATH

They should have called it the Ronnie Ray-Gun.

The only thing that will ever stop Africa's cycle of poverty is it's own leaders stopping fUcking their own people over, and that is not going to Happen.

Maybe we should develop a laser that targets the audio frequency of the beating of their wings.

It'll probably be in every American's back yard before it's used for any disease fighting good in poor nations.

Probably, but the good thing is that the former will probably fund the latter, and you know the latter actually will probably happen, because it's a Gates Pet Project.

No matter how little Microsoft deserves to be the dominant world OS, it's undeniable that Mrs Gates has grabbed enough of the cash and made a whopping blow to save a lot of individual human lives.

Oh yeah, and I believe Africa's feudal/tribal warlords are fricking their own continent right up, and keeping themselves all down, and there could be some rapid development if money went to infrastructure for common use being built instead of being all stolen away by corrupt individuals. But as far as I know, the health problem is an intertwined problem. People die way too young, they can't pass on their knowledge. It's a catch-22 that requires both horns of the problem being tackled at once. And malaria is stupidly rampant, and stupidly fatal.

This reminds me of the ill-fated Sgt York self-propelled anti-aircraft gun. During one test its radar locked on to an outhouse exhaust fan, mistaking the radar return from the fan as that of an enemy helicopter. The anti-mosquito laser might endanger kazoo players everywhere!

So, since it's the female mosquitoes that suck blood, does that mean it will only kill female mosquitoes?

I can imagine a scenario where some scalawag found out what frequency mosquito wings buzz at, and goaded someone into humming a song that hit that note, a la this video, at 6:00.

Also i'm all for lazer based solutions but they have already introduced and irradiated mozzie to certain parts of Africa with huge results and that is more likely to be a inexpencive and workable solution unlike a technology based product more likely to be used by a tourist than a native.

Besides if the lazer based solution does not involve Wombats, it's bust before it starts, Wombats and lazers are symbiotic.

You should really click here. NSFW due to language.

Also, mosquito targeting lasers sound pretty damn sweet. They put that crappy old citronella candle to shame.

I have not found any technical specs on the lasers used. That said, my off the cuff guess is one pulse to an eye and your nickname is one-eye. Unless it sweeps across both, in which case you're blind.

Ergo, I doubt it will make it out of the lab.
