(CNN) -- A long-hidden message has been discovered inside Abraham Lincoln's pocket watch, the Smithsonian's Museum of American History announced Tuesday.

Watchmaker Jonathan Dillon was repairing Lincoln's watch in April 1861 when he heard about the attack on Fort Sumter, South Carolina, and wrote a short message on the metal inside the watch, the Smithsonian said.

There it remained, unseen for almost 150 years, it said.

[...]

The actual message that the museum found differs from the watchmaker's recollection. It says, "Jonathan Dillon, April 13-1861, Fort Sumpter [sic] was attacked by the rebels on the above date J Dillon, April 13-1861, Washington, thank God we have a government, Jonth Dillon."

WHAT?!?!?! Everyone knows he's the most famousest of all Republicans. Before their ideology did a 180 with that of the Democrats.

Lincoln didn't inscribe that, his watchmaker did. Therefore, his watchmaker who loved government so much was the liberal commie terrorist.

So having the message in his watch was a liberal commie terrorist plot to control the president through time-warp mind control! It was only thwarted by all that unfortunate assassination business, which was Good For The Country in that case (since it stopped the liberal commie terrorist plot and all.)

Here's food for thought: up until the moment it was decided to crack it open to look at the watch, how would the world have been different if the watchmaker hadn't inscribed a message there?

Not much? It's not as though it was special intelligence or a secret message getting across. It was just some watch repairguy wasting valuable watch fixin' time by writing in Lincoln's watch.

I guess it's better than "LAWL I'm writin' in the President's watch!" or "JD was here" or "for a good time, dial 72."

I'm convinced its a key to a buried treasure. I move that we contact Benjamin Franklin Gates immediately, on the condition that I get 50% of the findings.

This would be way cooler if it had some future telling, like mentioning who kills Lincoln or something.

Not getting enough attention?

Conservatives think some government is good. Just not a ridiculous amount of it in everything. As much as you want to paint us all as crazy finger pointing, its just not true, just like not every liberal is going to scream someone who dislikes Obama is a hateful gun-toting racist.. I think..

I don't understand this hate for Obama. Either he does a better job of running the country than Bush did, which we can all agree is a good thing, or he fucks it up even more which means you all elected someone exceptionally gifted.
