I left out the key word "many"
One thing that always bothered me is that the Republicans are red and the Democrats blue. It goes against the standard. Though I do think the US Government still goes by the proper color scheme, unlike the media who are doing it wrong.

When the 2000 elelction dragged out and we all stared at electoral state maps for weeks on end, the Red/Blue ones used by the majority of the major news organizations became the de facto standard and as we heard "As you can see from the blue Gore states..." and "The number of votes in the red Bush states..." over and over, the idea of Red = Republican / Blue = Democrat solidified in people's minds.

It worked damn well too. Like it's always been that way.
Lolwiki article gives a slightly different account from mine but it's the same general message: Red/Blue didn't become entrenched until this last decade and was directly because of the maps used in the 2000 election.

I've always felt the opposite seemed more apt. Blue bieng for blue blooded Republicans or symbolizing the aristocracy, and red being for communist Democrats or symbolizing "for the people" policies.
It also seems like the donkey and elephant should be switched, though I realize that is a tradition from farhter in the past where the parties did not align themselves on the same borders they do now. But presently the elephant symbolizing the Dem's bloated government and the donkey symbolizing Republican rhetoric seems more apt to me.

It's a bit weird for me, because the Tories' colour is blue and Labour's is red.

It's the same way in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Germany as well. (Though Japan will use Green(Centre-Right LDP) and Black (Social Liberal DPJ) as well. Never understood that scheme.)
