WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Pentagon said Monday that Chinese ships harassed a U.S. surveillance ship Sunday in the South China Sea in the latest of several instances of "increasingly aggressive conduct" in the past week.
[...]
"Because the vessels' intentions were not known, Impeccable sprayed its fire hoses at one of the vessels in order to protect itself," the statement said. "The Chinese crewmembers disrobed to their underwear and continued closing to within 25 feet."

Why would they strip down to their underwear?

Edit: FARK.com's headline is pretty funny:
Quote:
Chinese sailors in their underwear molest US Navy ship, which fights back with squirt guns. Then it gets weird.

If they were gathering intelligence data off of our coasts, even if it were international waters, we'd do the same to them. Except for the stripping to the skivvies part.

I love how this article completely passes over the fact that they took off their clothes like its no big deal and It happens all the time... Maybe it does and we are just hearing about this?

I suppose that would be the best way to have someone notice your seamen from a ways away.

Wet clothing can be heavy, awkward, tiring, and depending on the clothing, chafing and downright dangerous. I fail to see why it's weird to be pragmatic. If you don't have bulletproof gear anyway, then being hampered by your clothing in an important situation is silly.

China is subject to massive and very dangerous floods, to which the People's Liberation Army regularly attends for daring rescue and emergency engineering efforts. They may well be comfy operating in their undies.

I should not have read this thread. I now see images of naked chinamen running around boats singing "in the Navy" in my head Smiley: dubious

And it does make sense they might take some clothes off, if it means they are free to move. Wet clothes can slow you down afterall.

Isn't exposing your bum to someone you're angry with considered a pretty high-end insult in Chinese social dynamics? Like unto pointing the sole of your shoe at an Arab or flipping an American the double bird?
