This has popped up because of this story in the news.

90 mile round trip to school ... That is a very long way to go. Much too far.
I used to take over an hour to reach school but I enjoyed it as I had friends to travel with.

How long a journey was your school commute? And if you are a parent, how long (or far) would you be willing to send your child to a secondary school?

I have a 120 mile round trip to work every day.

It's oh so fun. But I can't make this much anywhere else, so I don't mind so much.

Am I reading that right? He was placed in a school 45 miles away because he didn't qualify (academically, I assume) to attend any closer school?

It says he passed his exam, but the schools near him are full.

Edit: Don't know why they can't just have a slightly overcrowded school for a year, and have the department of education reallocate funds for next year based on each school's population.

Edit 2: Could be so space-overcrowded that they can't physically accomodate any more students without an addition, I suppose.

Edit 3: Remember "Hoop Dreams" the documentary? The kids went to my high school. The film featured their 3-hour commute from inner-city Chicago out to the suburbs (and it's only 17 miles). But it's a private school and it was their choice.

Ah, my brain glossed over "heavily subscribed".

It'd help if the folks at the BBC learned to speak American.

I'm not sure how long it was, but it was up hill. Both ways.

Seriously, though, I was always within a mile of school, or boarding, so I had what I would assume is a non typical experience of never riding on a School Bus to get to school, only for field trips or sports or whatever.

My school commutes have always been pretty short. My psuedo-in laws sent their children to a private school that was about a 40 minute commute each way.

I used to commute about 65 miles each way to NYC. The time it took to travel that far was much more than you might expect as it involved the need to show up early for trains (or not get a seat), and wait. Typically, if all went well (and it rarely did), I spent five and a half to six hours a day commuting. When things went badly it was much worse.

My bus rides were about an hour in the afternoon but only about 15 minutes in the morning.. But that's because of the maze of a path the ride took, went out past my house, back around the lake, then came up the other side to my house finally.

I was one of the last to get on the bus, and one of the last to get off. If they had dropped me off at the local convenience store I could have walked the one mile to my home before the bus made it back around to my actual stop.

My last two years of High School were a cross town commute, (from Parkville to Wilkens and Caton ave. if you know Baltimore.) total distance is about 20 miles, bus ride in AM with my dad on the express to downtown was 24 min and another 20 min or so to Gibbons HS. Going home took longer as there was no express service.)

I walked to grade school and took the bike the five miles to what was then Towson State College.

For Grad school I did attend Howard University in D.C.(45 miles) but only had to do that two days a week.

Round trip my commute each weekday is about 75miles. It takes 40~60 minutes one way normally depending on traffic. If it snows it takes 2-2.5 hours one way.

When it snows I want to kill myself.. or ram my car into the medians.

That's college though, I walked the .7 miles to my high school until I stole my moms car. XD

Anything over an hour is too much in my opinion. If I had to drive more than that, I'd move.

My school commute was around an hour and a half each way. I was one of the first on my bus and it was a hick school *K-12*. I ended up using that time to sleep. (Got on the bus at 7:30 and got to school around 9)

80 miles roundtrip when I was growing up. Even more if we had to merge with the kids from the Amado bus. And that happened about twice a week.

What makes this story worse is that in the UK we don't have the School Bus service that exists in North America.

A few schools here have local buses that pick up within a few miles, but beyond that it's down to the parents to get their kids to school by car, or trust them to get there under their own steam using paid public transport (trains, buses etc.)

I went to a school across the county, and even that only took me 30 minutes by car. (Bus ride was 2 hours at night.)

The high school that I went to was a private Catholic one and while I was very lucky that my commute was about 15 minutes by car, there were students that traveled more than an hour each way. A few of the students were from very wealthy families that lived in Tijuana and I think they traveled a couple of hours each way, mostly because of the border wait. If I remember right, Bishop's in La Jolla had students from the Los Angeles area that lived with host families during the week and they would go home during the weekends.
