Ergo, "anyone who doesn't agree with me is not a scientist!" Now THAT is science right there. That's also excellent political rhetoric. "Anyone who disagrees with me is evil!"

Yeah, you completely missed the point. A biologist is a scientist, but she knows squat about climatology in the same way that a plumber is ignorant about biology. But explaining this is pointless, because you still won't understand what it means.

Have you read any of the research journals by climatologists on the issue or do you just assume facts that contradict your ideas haven't been proved? I only ask to be polite, I already know the answer.

What a non-answer. So there is no reason for you to dispute man-made global warming other than you wish it to be that way. Okay sparky. Have fun surfing.

You don't understand debating then, paulsol. Basically, when things are well-established in the relevant scientific community--like global warming, the person discrediting it has the burden of proving their point. It's the same way that in an argument about evolution, the burden is on someone who doesn't believe in it to justify their point or that we pretty much know that blood letting isn't an effective treatment for tuberculosis and if you still believed in that treatment, it'd be up to you to justify it. My side has the weight of expert consensus. You have nothing but what you figure, in your non-scientific way.

Isn't it unfortunate that people who don't believe the same things you do get the same amount of importance given to their vote?

I suppose it's easy to feel frustrated, living in Texas an all.

I'm not sure what you think you are getting at Iamadam. My personal opinion on this issue is as irrelevant as anyone else here, but I'm choosing to side with the world community of climatologists rather than against them.

Your opinion is very relevant and it shows in the passion of your posts. I'm sure that you would have more success in convincing others of your position if you empathized with them instead of belittling and dismissing them. Until then, you're just spouting the same rhetoric that we've all heard before.

Normally you would be correct. I have difficulty with argumentative empathy. However, in this situation my demeanor is irrelevant. I posted a link that essentially says "All the world's scientists agree on this issue." In that situation no amount of sugar or spice matters.

If someone says "prove leprechauns exist," and I pull a leprechaun from my trousers it doesn't matter whether I'm nice about it or a jerk. The person is either a slightly rational individual or has chosen to ignore reality completely.

I'm not understanding why you linked that article. Not only is it published by Discovery News, but in it Mr. Swanson concludes "Thirty years of greenhouse gas radiative forcing will still be there and then bang, the warming will return and be very aggressive." I don't udnerstand your objective.

I would actually ask you how you can reasonably interpret it that 'every' scientist signed it, because there is no way that every scientist could or would sign it.

I tend to get lazy about my qualifiers when they don't practically matter, saying "Almost every climatologist in the world save a few fringe persons agree," just doesn't have pizazz.

It's a joint statement affirmed by the academy of science of your nation, the UK, China, India, Belgium, France, Sweden, etc.

There will always be dissenters, but there are not enough of them to take their opinion seriously.

And I believe that they are important enough to take their opinions seriously. Not so much to the place where I'll stand up and scream that global warming is a myth, but that I'm willing to listen to what they have to say just as much as the true believers.

I would interpret that document as numerous scientists agreeing on the one topic. While there is weight in that, it is not enough for me to take the 'all or nothing' stance on the subject that many people have taken.

Is 1 dissenter out of every 100 climatologists acceptable, 1/10,000, 1/1,000,000? It's your choice where to draw the line, but I believe that for whatever reason you are choosing to set an unreasonably small criteria for what constitutes a consensus. I'm not even sure if the theory of evolution fits your standards for consensus.

That's okay, because like you said I get to draw the line for my own belief system. It's a line that moves with the side of the bed I wake up on, and there's nothing you can do to affect it.

And for the record, I do fully believe in the theory of evolution. Maybe when the theory of man-made global warming is around long enough, I'll fully believe in it too. Until then, I'll keep my mind open to new thinking and ideas.
